The progress bar at the start of OS X Yosemite 10.10

progress bar

Apple adds a new way of seeing the boot of our Mac and this has caused a certain stir in social networks and forums, by users. Many of them wonder if the bar that appears when starting our Mac with OS X Yosemite 10.10 installed is normal and the answer to that question is yes, if it is normal.

We are not clear why Apple adds this progress bar or loading line during the startup of the new OS X 10.10, but this bar has been there since the first beta and it is something that we do not think they will eliminate at the moment. Can this progress bar make the user start feeling faster?

Or, on the contrary, does it cause more impatience and give the feeling of slower loading? The truth is that seeing an apple on the screen completely still was not so bad (at least for my taste) and it made you not look at it constantly waiting for the Mac to start, but when adding the bar create that effect of being aware to fully charge.

The progress bar reminds us of firmware loading (although it is thicker) on the Mac and iOS devices when updating. We do not know if Apple will keep it there forever but for now we can tell you that if you see the loading bar every time you restart your Mac with OS X Yosemite, don't worry, it is something normal that comes to all of us.

The problem is that in my imac in full update to Yosemite, the computer has been in this screen exactly and from there it has not left. Great for Apple. I've run out of computer…. I'm worried that this is already looking like the always excellent windows upgrades…. 🙁

Now I was more comfortable with the progress bar, I have measured the time it takes to start up and shut down and it gives me this:
    Start-up: 1:43 minutes
    Shutdown: 2:43 minutes
Clearly, the shutdown takes a long time, I don't know why, the startup not so long, but it also takes a little longer. What do you think, the same thing happens to you?

1,43 and 2,43 is outrageous ... to me with a normal hard drive 45 seconds and with SSD about 20 seconds

3 teams and the same thing happens. Two Mac Book laptops and one iMac. When you install the Yosemite on top, the system startup and shutdown take forever. The laptop battery drains quickly. Far are the 6 hours of autonomy that it achieved with previous versions. In normal use, browsing the internet on several occasions, Safari has unexpectedly closed for me. Has anyone tried installing Yosemite from scratch? Has anyone found any solution to this problem?

    1.    Jordi Giménez said

      Hi Elis,
12 hours is not normal that it takes to install so something fails in your installation. I advise you to reload the system again. If you have a backup all your files and documents are saved so you don't lose anything.

It is always advisable to carry out a backup on Time Machine or hard disk, it is something that we always warn before updating 🙁 Having said that and seeing that your Mac does not advance, turn it off and then start with the - alt - key pressed and select the disk recovery.

Hello everyone. Exactly the same thing they describe here was happening to me: after I installed Yosemite, it worked fine for a couple of days and suddenly, it was left on the home screen and the static progress bar. My solution was to start with alt -as recommended by Jordi-, then I went to Disk Utility and there, "Verify and repair disks" and "Verify and repair permissions". I went out right there and rebooted. It worked. I write from my Mac working perfect. 😉 I hope it helps you.

Hello Sebas, I installed from 0 and it's fine, you have to create the boot disk and that…. There are tutorials on you tube, Yosemite takes up more resources on mac, so if your ram is low you will have problems that everything runs slower, also depending on the processor, but be careful make backup copies, the subject of some apps like autocad 2015 does not work for me (of course it is not the original) I have no way to crack it ..., I hope it will help you. in conclusion format from 0

Well, I had the problem yesterday, the only solution that I found was to be so with alt and power at the same time go to the recovery disk and download Yosemite again and it is okay for me that there are missing adjustments to this update.

Right now Jhon fredy f was writing to you, I'm glad you solved it now perform a verification and repair of discs and enjoy.

I have to say that my Mac works wonderfully with Yosemite and I don't understand why it works so well for some (like me) and others it doesn't work for them directly ... I already explained it in the tutorial about updating from scratch https://www.soydemac.com/2014/10/17/como-instalar-de-cero-os-x-yosemite-10-10/ Sometimes it is best to install clean, which does not cost much and is very effective in eliminating problems and bugs of the previous OS X.

    MacintoshHD/Library/LaunchDaemons

I rebooted and emptied the trash.
By turning off the problem again it was solved.

I have a problem with yosemite. Both installed clean and directly on the first day it goes well and turns off and on in 2 and 5 seconds with a macbook pro retina and after the first day it restarts again and again while loading the white bar and there it remains in a loop without being able to do anything and have k put back mavericks. Neither booting in safe mode nor restoring disk permissions nor anything works. The technical service gave me a solution, wait for a new update from yosemite to correct this error but they do not know what error it is and neither do I. I have done it 4 times and I am already seeing that in my life I will have yosemite. Am I the only one that happens to him? Do you know any solution? My determination to update is that I have an iphone 6 plus and an ipad retina and with yosemite I can do many things with all the devices together. I hope you can help me.

Hi how are things. I am new to this Os x my problem is similar, I updated my OS to Yosemite 2 days ago, the problem is that the bar stays in the middle with the apple on top as it happens to some. For my advantage (or disadvantage) is that I have the HD participating in iOS x and Window; Windows runs wonderfully, I would like to know how to repair or install the Mavericks, since I tried from the bootable usb and only the loading circle appears (typical) and from there it does not happen either. I do not mind losing files what I need is to install the Mavericks. P. D I did not make the copy to restore. I look forward to your help and thank you in advance

  36.   Carlos Dlr said

Hello everyone, I'm new around here ... my problem is similar to Ismael Torres, I have my 27-inch iMac with a partition for windows and another for Yosemite, the problem occurred a few days ago when when I turned on the computer it stayed on a totally gray screen, just after the process bar they talk about here, it loads and it gets stuck on that screen and if you wait a long time it restarts automatically, I tried all the possible commands and each one of them brings me to the end to that gray screen and from there it does not happen, (ALT, CMD + S, etc ...) I also created a bootable USB with the Yosemite system, but it begins to read the USB and it takes me to the gray screen again, without giving me an option accessing the System Disk Utility… the only partition that works is the windows partition and I can only access it in safe mode. I think the only possible solution is to take the information from the windows partition and save it to an external disk and then extract the disk and format it as a slave on another computer. After a lot of thinking about it, I think that at some point when updating Yosemite something related to BOOTCAMP was loaded and for this reason the normal startup of the equipment does not go, the truth is, I don't even know what to do ... I hope to find a solution before having to disarm the hard drive, greetings.

    1.    Jordi Giménez said

Is it possible that by accessing the Windows partition you can make a backup copy and then format the disk? I think it is the only option that can work for you or ask directly for Apple technical assistance before training in case they know the solution to the problem. What is clear is that in some of the steps of the Yosemite installation it created a conflict with the installed Windows partition.

We wait for the solutions and you tell us Carlos.

      1.    Carlos Dlr said

Thanks Jordi, I also suppose that it is the only solution, but the problem later will be to format the disk without having to physically remove it, I think the most convenient thing would be to connect it to another iMac that I have and format it with the disk utility of this one, with a Firewire cable. But before all this, I think I'm going to listen to you and call technical assistance in case they have another type of solution, which I doubt very much ...

Thank you, I'll keep telling you how I solve it.

      2.    iframe MC said

Jordi and starting over FireWire wouldn't it be a better idea than formatting if you have two Macs? I repaired many macs with Yosemite with the same problem keeping CMD + R connecting it with another pc before by FireWire and I changed the boot partition and the Mac ran out and I was able to save 2 Tb of information from a Mac Book 2012

        1.    Jordi Giménez said

It is possible that IMarco works, but I never carry out that process that you basically comment because I do not have two Macs.

Franco, if you have another Mac, press CMD + R while it starts and select the boot disk by FireWire, if you do not have another Mac but if you have a Windows pc, download Rufus this will create a pendrive with the boot for the Mac and Search the internet for the Mac OS Snow leopard that will work on the Mac without problems, you will lose all the data unless you have a backup copy but at least your Mac will come back to life 🙂

Hello friends, it is the first time I write here but I see that everyone has the same problem, the same thing happens to me with a macbook air from 2013, before I had mavericks without problems, it was updated to yosemite and apparently everything runs perfect in the first session, but Be careful if the equipment is turned off or restarted, it never reboots as it should, reinstall yosemite from the server and again the system recovers but it restarts or turns off, and does not go back in, thinking as they say above to start the Installation from scratch, I proceeded to do it from a formatted USB and creating the partitions so that no traces of the previous system would be left, reviewing and verifying the persistence and the state of the disk, and everything goes well, start yosemite as it should but again turn off or You restart the computer and the bar does not advance more than half, this means that something is wrong with that operating system, I tell you what happened to me with a 2011 macbook that also had mavericks and it urges If I went to the service center and they told me that they had to change the flex of the hard disk because it was damaged but the symptoms were the same, I wonder if Yosemite damages the flex of the hard disk, I do not want to think that is to commercialize more, but I would like to know if someone has the image of the maverick system or if apple is responsible for its stupid yosemite, the garbage that has been created throughout its history.
