First batch of carbon-free manufactured aluminum on its way to Apple factories

In recent years, aluminum has become a widely used material by Apple not only in MacBoos, but also in iPhones and iPads. Thanks to recycling program offered by Apple, many are the MacBook that reach the market using aluminum that has been recycled from older models.

In its commitment to the environment, Apple reached a collaboration agreement with the Elysis company in 2018, a j between Alcoa and Rio Tinto, the world's two largest companies in the aluminum industry, and made a significant investment last year to be able to get carbon-free aluminum.

As we can read in Reuter, through the Elysis blog, Apple has bought the first batch of aluminum that this company has manufactured, a batch that has been processed without using charcoalTherefore, clean energy has been used in the process, a batch that will go directly to Apple factories to manufacture new devices.

Apple made the first investment in this company last year, but Alcoa has been investing in R&D to process aluminum without using carbon since 2009. This process has been carried out at the facilities that both companies have in Pittsburgh. Elysis is building a new facility in Saguenay, Quebec, that will be responsible for extracting alumina from bauxite using an electrolysis process without using coal.

Lisa Jackson, Apple's chief executive officer, says that the future of aluminum manufacturing has been the same for more than 13 years, but that will change while maintaining Apple's commitment to the environment. It should be remembered that today, all companies that manufacture parts or assemble components get their electricity from renewable sources, one of the most important requirements to be able to work with Apple.
