What does True Tone technology bring us in the 2018 MacBook Pro?

When Apple renews a product, we expect performance news: more processor, more RAM or faster, or graphics card, but we also expect news not seen before. With the new MacBook Pro models introduced yesterday, we saw the new "Hello Siri" feature for the first time on a Mac, thanks to the T2 processor, but it's also the first Mac to mount a True Tone display.

In this article we will try to tell you the advantages of this screen, to see if this type of screen compensates us or the current model works for us. We also want tell you what our screen will look like from now on.

We have a display capable of 500 nits of brightness and a wide P3 color gamut. But the big news is True Tone technology. This type of screen was first seen in the Apple ecosystem on the 9,7-inch iPad Pro. The main feature is the white balance to be more attractive to the user regardless of the ambient light in the room. The best way to check the effect is to change rooms or change the lighting of the current room, by switching on a light that changes the light temperature of the room.

In these cases, the perception by the user's eye changes with the change of lights. True Tone screens have sensors that detect ambient light, to adjust the screen and counteract the perceived. Therefore, the only thing that really contributes is comfort for the user and allow to adapt the screen at the moment, like the contribution we currently have with Night Shift.

Although some users indicate that this can harm graphic professionals, they have enough knowledge to calibrate the screen. In this sense, Apple contributed the app ColorSync to aid in desired adjustment.

If you do not know how changing the screen type will affect you, it is best to do the test with an iPad Pro or iPhone X that have a True Tone screen, where you can activate or deactivate the function to see the effect.
