A Facebook bug reveals more than 6 million accounts

Although this news is not directly related to the Mac world, it seems to me important enough to echo us on the blog since to a greater or lesser extent a good part of us, including myself, have created an account on Facebook or at least acquaintances who have it, leaving aside the use that we give it.

And the thing is that things seem to have gotten ugly at times for Facebook, although thank God it has not grown older and the security bug appeared has been discovered by a group of hackers that work for Facebook precisely for this, detect these failures and do not reach more.

Once the problems have been solved thanks to this group of hackers belonging to the white hat program. The company created by Mark Zuckerberg has got down to work to launch a statement indicating the efforts and interest in safety of users in the social network but that no company, no matter how strong it may be, can guarantee 100% security in all aspects, which is why sometimes these cases that they call "strange" happen. Without further ado I leave you an extract of said statement.

Even with a strong team, no company can guarantee 100% failure prevention, and in rare cases a problem may not be discovered until it has affected a person's account. This is one of the reasons why we also have the White Hat program to collaborate with researchers from external security companies […]

In total they were affected about 6 million accounts with data such as addresses, emails and phone numbers. The good thing about all this is that the information has only been identified in a few fields, so passwords and possible account tampering are 'safe'.

Describing what caused the error can be very technical, but we want to explain how it happened. When people upload their contact lists or address book to Facebook, we try to match the data with the contact information of other Facebook users in order to generate recommendations from friends […] some of the information used to make recommendations for friends and reducing the number of invitations we send was inadvertently stored in association with people's contact information as part of their Facebook account.

Let's hope that failures of this type will not be repeated, although I do not know why I am wrong.
