A failure in Google's servers affected different iCloud services

iCloud

If throughout yesterday afternoon you experienced a problem with the different services that Apple makes available to us, it is likely that you blamed your terminal or Internet connection It was Sunday and I didn't feel like working. But no, the problem came directly from Google.

Apparently Google's storage service for companies, Google Cloud, suffered a cut throughout the afternoon yesterday causing numerous websites and services, including those of Google itself, Snapchat and Discord to stop working or to slow down.

ICloud server problems

Apple was also affected by this temporary communication cut-off with Google's servers, the mail being the most affected, iCloud Drive, Messages, Photos and Documents, services that were executed yesterday afternoon with a slower pace than usual.

Apple confirmed last year that it depends on Google Cloud as the backbone for some of their iCloud products, as well as Amazon S3. The data that is stored on the Google iCloud servers are contacts, calendars, photos, videos, documents among others, hence most of these services were affected by the cut.

Although Apple uses third-party servers to store customer data, these do not have access to them at any time, as he explained when he confirmed that in addition to Amazon's servers, he also used Google's.

Each file is divided into chunks and encrypted using AES-128 and a key derived from the contents of each fragment using SHA-256. Apple stores the keys and file metadata in the user's iCloud account. The encrypted fragments of the file are stored, without any type of identification, on third-party servers, such as Google Cloud or Amazon S3.
