Apple patents a new Heads-up Display system with Augmented Reality

Heads Up Display Apple

We know that Apple is interested in both Augmented Reality and the automotive sector, especially when it comes to autonomous cars. And a new license pick up the idea that the company has of betting on a Heads-up Display system with extra information for the driver based on AR technology.

For those who are unfamiliar with these Heads-up Displays, they are found in many modern vehicles and are located on the dashboard, right in front of the driver's view and which is present when the car is started. In this translucent screen we will have relevant information such as how fast we are driving; the traffic signs that we encounter along the way or traffic alerts. Nevertheless, Apple believes it can provide even more information and has patented a system that makes use of Augmented Reality.

We know that Apple is interested in this last field and a first approach was made effective with ARKit. And we have known for a long time that Apple wants to get fully into the world of autonomous cars, but not by building your own vehicle, but by entering the software. Or at least that is what is currently suggested. This does not rule out that in the future Apple will bet on the construction of its own vehicles with electric propulsion. On the other hand, we know that Apple is working with a reduced fleet of vehicles in the United States with a roof-mounted LIDAR system collecting information.

Likewise, the patent reveals one of the parts to be dealt with in a possible autonomous car with Apple as the brain. In the Apple Heads-up Display, in addition to the usual instructions for these systems, Information about the surroundings of the driver — and passengers — would also be offered, as well as being able to offer data that is not yet visible.

On the other hand, as can be seen in the images attached to the patent, the information would be projected on the windshield of the vehicle; that is, as we indicated before, This information is not only intended to be a driver support, but it would be expanded to all occupants of the vehicle.

Meanwhile, it also appears to be a system that provides significant help in low visibility situations: dense fog, heavy rain or poor road lighting. At the moment everything is ideas and we will see how Apple wants to integrate all these ideas in the future.
