A video is published with the first iMac with a "homemade" M1 processor

iMac M1

For the record, in the headline of the news I have already put «home»So as not to mislead the staff. Because the truth is that if I had omitted that word, I was left with a headline that was too shocking, and more than one would have been disappointed when reading the full story.

The fact is that a handyman who is fond of the Apple world, has embedded a Mac mini with M1 processor inside a iMac ancient. And it works like a pearl. His video on YouTube proves it. So it really is arguably the first iMac with an M1 processor. And it is not false, since all the components are from Apple, but let's say it is ... homemade.

Luke miani you can boast of having the first iMac with an M1 processor in your home… But you can't finish the sentence, because it's not the first on the market, since it will never be released. He has taken a Mac mini with an M1 processor, removed the case, and put it inside a 2011 iMac, connecting the screen to it. The idea is good, but of course, it is an iMac Apple silicon more fake than a 6 Euro bill.

Miani points out that the Mac mini motherboard is so small that it can fit comfortably inside the iMac chassis without any modifications. Using a display adapter HDMI from the Mac mini motherboard to the custom display connector to Apple iMac makes the iMac work like the Mac mini display.

As a general idea it is good, but of course, technically it has its limitations. First of all, the 2011 iMac has a very low resolution by today's standards. Its 27-inch 2560-by-1440-pixel pre-Retina display isn't an ideal way to use macOS these days. Second, the "computer" part of this setup is the Mac mini, inside the iMac chassis. With the current build, all ports - and the power button - are inside the chassis and completely inaccessible from the outside without removing the screen.

Although it loses performance if you compare it with its usual state when normally connected to a monitor, it can "show off" that it has the first iMac from the Apple Silicon era. There are people for everything.
