According to Gary Vaynerchuck, the failure of Planet of the Apps was due to a problem with the content

Planet of the Apps Show

Planet of the Apps was Apple's first bet within the creation of exclusive content for the Apple Music platform. Planet of the Apps will show us a reality show where developers had to create innovative applications in order to win the final prize that will allow them to develop the application. It was a failure.

Not only did the developers frown upon this reality show, but it also failed to attract the interest of Apple Music users, despite the celebrities who made up the jury and where we had Gwyneth Paltrow, Will [i.am], Jessica Alba and Andy Vaynerchuck. According to Andy, Apple did not make use of the different marketing tools available to it. Everything was wrong.

Andy assures that they taught him when he was little, that when he is in another house, he must show respect. When I was in production meetings with Iovine, he had to bite his tongue almost tore it off, because I did not want to leave one of the two founders of Beats Music in a bad place, a service that after the acquisition by Apple became Apple Music.

During that stage, Iovine wasn't involved enough in the show and that was noticed in all the episodes. But what stands out the most was the bad marketing campaign used. In the second episode, a developer claimed that he rarely saw his son due to his workload. It was at that moment that Andy saw how the show's format, created around applicants who wanted to create applications, was not going to be revolutionary.

Fortunately, Apple seems to have changed its mind, and does not plan to create any other similar content, but is focusing on scripts for drama series and comedies, as we are reporting each time information is published about Apple's new video streaming service that will probably see the light in March 2019 at the earliest.
