What advantages will we have when working with the APFS disk system

Assuming that Apple follows the same script from previous years, we should see the presentation of its new operating systems at the end of September. Apple has christened this system with the name of MacOS High Sierra. On this occasion, a priori we will not see major external changes at the Interface level. Instead, the interior of the system receives relevant changes, not only to correct errors from previous versions, but to improve the user experience. In this sense, the most important change is represented by the new disc format. From now on, if your Mac has SSD hard drives, the system will choose Apple's new format known as APFS.

And it will choose this system without giving us the possibility to choose which system we want to choose. It is true that in beta versions, it does ask if you want to format the new format, but everything seems to indicate that the final version does not allow such a choice. In the case of mechanical disks, the data will not be migrated to the new format. The doubt existed with fusion disks (HDD + SSD). Everything seems to indicate that they will not be formatted to the new format either, remaining in HFS +.

Therefore, if you have SSD drives you are in luck. First of all: What about disks that remain in HFS + format, like external disks? Don't worry, APFS will be able to read them without any problems.

But what does APFS bring us in our day to day? As we saw in the WWDC 2017 keynote, faster read and write speed. For example, copying a multi-gigabyte file takes seconds. But if that wasn't enough, our daily work will be much more productive in response and capacity. The tests carried out with different equipment allow us better response times and better optimization of our hard drive. We show you some examples:

  • A 5 MacBook Pro i2015 with a PCI-E SSD boots up in 24 seconds. After installing macOS High Sierra, boot time was just 18 seconds.
  • Testing with a 2012 Mac mini, specifically an i7 with SATA-3 SSD, went from 42 seconds to 27 seconds after the update.

We hope to see more results in the coming days and the team at Soy de Mac He will tell you right away.

All this is fine and it sure is a fantastic solution, but what about third party software? There is software that gives an error and does not get installed in this file system, for example Autocad ……. I have read in a forum that if it is already installed in Sierra and it is updated it does work, but that it is not able to install in a clean installation of High Sierra. Do you know any other program that happens?
