Apple and other companies create Connected Home over IP

Apple partners with other companies to improve the home automation experience

Smart homes, those that do everyday tasks for us, have always been a priority for companies like Apple. Thus, it has joined other giants such as Googley Amazon, among others, creating Connected Home over IP. A standard to improve the user experience in home automation.

Right now, each company has its own devices and standards for technology to help people make things easier. But there is a tendency for several companies to come together to create a group of joint work from which to push the development and manufacture of home automation devices in a joint and compatible way.

Connected Home over IP comes to facilitate the user the domotic experience in homes

Under the name Connected Home over IP, 16 companies have come together to create smart home standards to facilitate the user the use of smart devices adding further, security and confidence. These 16 companies are:

  • Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC),
  • Amazon
  • Google
  • Zigbee Alliance. Which has developed a low-cost, low-power standard for communication between devices. Its low latency is a huge draw and it is built into many devices on the Internet of Things.
  • Ikea
  • Legrand
  • leedarson
  • MMB Networks
  • NXP
  • I reside
  • Smart Things: Property of Samsung since 2014.
  • scheineder
  • Signify
  • Silicon Labs
  • Somfy
  • wulian

As you will see in the list we have the three great technology companies. Samsung does not want to lose this opportunity, which if it goes ahead could be a reef for these companies. There are also other companies like Ikea, who has played with home automation devices and which are compatible with the Apple ecosystem.

The objective of the Connected Home Project by IP is simplify development for manufacturers and increase compatibility for consumers. The project is built on a common belief that home automation devices should be safe, reliable and easy to use. By building it on the IP, the project aims to enable communication between home automation devices, apps, cloud services and thus define a series of IP-based communication technologies for device certification.

You can get more details of the project through the website that has been created for this purpose, leveraging existing technology from Apple with HomeKit or Amazon with Alexa.

The Connected Home over IP project will use Apple's HomeKIt among others

The working group wanted to clarify two very important points about the project:

  1. The first, that all current devices will be compatible with the new protocol.
  2. If they are successful, the consumer will have the certainty that whatever product they buy or device they have, it will be compatible.

We will be able to see the first devices from 2021.
