Apple announces Final Cut 10.4 with a new color editor, support for VR and HDR workflos and more

For some time now, it seems that Apple continues to put aside its applications when updating them by offering support for the new versions of macOS that it launches on the market. While is true that the last update of Final Cut Pro X corresponds to the month of May, the application is not showing any compatibility issues with the new version of macOS.

Apple has just announced at the Final Cut Pro X Creative Summit, which this year celebrates the third edition, version 10.4 of its professional video editor. Currently, the version available in the App Store is 10.3.4, a version that already offered support for the H.265 codec used in iOS 11 to record videos and take photos.

This codec is not new, hence Apple was in no rush to update its application, but still, it takes it very calmly when launching the update to make it 100% compatible with macOS High Sierra. The event in which the news that will come from the next version of Final Cut was shown, is aimed at professional video editors and it shows all the news and new functions that will arrive in future updates.

Among the news that Final Cut Pro X will bring us we find:

  • Support for VR workflows
  • Support for HDR workflows
  • Improvement and redesign of the color tool.
  • New color tools.
  • Improved the white balance interface.
  • Integrated support for LUT
  • Direct import of timelines from the iMove app for iOS

To show all attendees the new features, Apple has used an iMac Pro editing a video recorded in 8k. The iMac Pro, which is not yet for sale, will hit the market in December and its most basic version will start at $ 4.999 and is obviously aimed at the type of public that has attended this event.

Thanks for the information, Ignacio. But exactly when will it be available? as of today it does not support high quality files from the gopro 6. Thanks

It is likely that I will launch it together with the iMac Pro by the end of the year, something that I do not quite understand. Anyway, I understand that currently Final Cut is compatible with the H.265 codec used by both iPhone 8, Plus and X and GoPro Hero 6. I have a friend who is a video editor who works with Final Cut daily and I asked him about compatibility. Keep in mind, that this codec is not new, as you well know, so Apple would already offer support in previous versions. Anyway, if you have the opportunity, try it, if you don't tell me and I'll see my friend so he can do a test in front of me and I'll tell you.

Well now that I read, in the Final Cut Pro specifications https://www.apple.com/final-cut-pro/specs/ it does not support this codec. I will have to physically check it out with my friend.
