Apple sentenced to pay $ 450.000 for not properly recycling electronic waste

Apple for some time now has been characterized as one of the most environmentally friendly companies in practically the entire world. We are not only talking about the solar plants that supply electricity to many of the company's own stores, but also supply some of the factories where its devices are manufactured in China. It is also characterized by performing a process of recycling your devices in a sustainable way and trying to harm the environment as little as possible, but the beginnings are always hard and those who want something cost something.

The Cupertino-based company has reached an agreement to settle a lawsuit in which the company had been caught up in the wrong electronic waste process both at the Cupertino and Sunnyvale facilities, as reported by the California Environmental Protection Agency. Apparently during the years 2011 and 2012 Apple was managing electronic waste through a company that had not previously informed the regulatory authorities about its activity. The complex processed 1,1 million pounds of metal powder before being closed in January 2013.

The Sunnyvale complex processed 800.000 pounds before informing the authorities of its activity, the metal dust that was generated during the recycling process was thrown away instead of having it processed as dictated by the Environmental Protection Agency. But it seems that since then Apple has learned the lesson and currently has delegated the device recycling process to third parties that the company receives for recycling. Of course, Apple checks at all times that the companies in charge of the process are complying with the regulations established in the country where the processing is carried out.
