Apple hardens the installation of applications from macOS 10.14.5

Mac security

With the macOS 10.14.5 second beta launched a few hours ago for developers and a few hours later for the public subscribed to the program, we have found new requirements for application developers to pass the Apple filter through «Notarized Apps ».

With this, Apple wants the applications you install to carry all the Quality requirements regarding fullfilment of security requirements, thus avoiding the installation of malware or other suspicious programs. For it hardens filters that the apps that we later install on our Mac must pass, through the certification program of the developer identification program.

This will be the first step in the certification of these applications. Those that do not have the approval of Apple in macOS 10.15 cannot be installed on our Mac. In the internal document found on the Apple notarization page, it is indicated:

Starting with macOS 10.14.5, all new or updated kernel extensions and all new developer software to ship with the developer ID must be checked to run.

Verifying apps in macOS

The process forces all new developers to authenticate, while regular developers will eventually have to. It is not established how often it is necessary to authenticate with Apple. In this sense, it will also be necessary to certify all the software from future versions.

In a future version of macOS, notarization will be required for all software

The current process is as follows. When a developer has an application ready, they must send it to the apple system for a detailed analysis, focused on looking for malicious software. Applications that are not distributed through the Mac App Store they have a more rigorous control. When the software achieves Apple validity, a ticket assigned to the application, this code will be the one that validates Gatekeeper and allow the installation process to continue.

Although initially this means more work for developers as they have to prepare the application according to Apple's controls, in the medium and long term it can bring higher earnings by preventing the installation of pirated versions of your applications.
