A couple of days ago, Apple confirmed in a press release that it was adding the server-to-server web service to CloudKit. This will allow users, especially developers, add a lot of functionality to the applications powered by CloudKit and in this way interact with the database in iCloud directly. The web service API allows independent developers to run code on servers to add, delete, and modify records in the CloudKit stack.

Aside from already offering users a web interface, Apple has endowed the CloudKit public database one server side, to allow access with a server-to-server key. CloudKit was first launched in 2014 specifically targeting developers who create third-party applications to facilitate access to all information and thus provide security in the storage of such information. For example, it was introduced in the Photos application so that developers could keep track of both information and photos both in their mobile database and in iCloud.

Until now, interaction with CloudKit has been limited to Apple APIs in applications. Although this was useful, it lacked the options for more advanced use, most of the modern applications are server-based to perform tasks while users are not using them. With the addition of the API for web use, developers can create many more types of applications that use CloudKit as a backend. For example, an application such as an RSS reader can now add new feeds from the feed to the CloudKit stack from the server.

Ultimately, this tool will help make CloudKit more accessible and flexible for all clients and web developers third parties who need a tool to help them with client applications.
