Apple is working on more efficient and compact GaN chargers

GaN chargers

Apple's thing with iPhone chargers has always been a joke, offering 5W chargers for many years when the iPhone models on the market were compatible with fast charging. Fortunately, before the disappearance of chargers on the iPhone, Apple changed its policy, including higher power chargers.

If we talk about chargers, both for iPhone and Mac, we have to talk about the Gallium Nitride chargers, better known as GaN (Gallium Nitride), the chargers of the future as they offer a series of advantages over traditional chargers. According to the media DigiTimes, Apple is working to create a new line of GaN chargers for Macs.

According to this medium, Navitas Semiconductor will be the company that will be in charge of the manufacture of these chargers, lighter and more compact chargers. TSM will manufacture the management chips for Navitas. If this news is finally confirmed, Apple's MacBook will include smaller and more efficient chargers very similar to those that we can already find in the market from manufacturers like Anker.

Navitas is known for its line of GaNFast chargers, a line of chargers ranging from 24W to 300W. According to this same medium, Apple's range of GaN chargers It will be composed of 20W, 30W, 61W and 96W models all of them with USB-C connection obviously.

Advantages of gallium nitride

Gallium nitride chargers offer us a series of advantages over traditional silicon chargers since they generate much less heat and the components can be assembled closer together (by generating less heat) which in turn affects the final size of the chargers.

In addition, they incorporate an energy control system that decreases the chances of an overload of current once the battery has been fully charged, so the battery life of the notebooks will be long in time. As we can see, they are all advantages, at least for now.
