Apple News presents a bug in macOS Big Sur but it is already known how to solve it

Although the Apple News service is not one of the best services of the American company, this is how they are shown in the data from the last months of 2020. A lot of Spam and offers for users to subscribe to this modality of being aware of what is happening in the world. If we add to that that some users have been given more than a headache, it is not surprising that it is not Apple's preferred service. The problem as macOS Big Sur it is already known how to solve it, now it only remains to solve its lack of attractiveness.

Some users have claimed that using the Apple News service in macOS Big Sur, a rather tricky problem arose. Are produced downloads without permission and randomly. Downloads that take up a lot of space, even with several tens of Gb, making daily tasks useless.

The Apple News download error was raised on Apple's support forums in late December by user paulfromminnetonka. He noted that in macOS Big Sur, an Apple News application process called newsd it was downloading large amounts of data in the background.

My ISP notified me that I was close to using my allotted monthly download limits only in the first few days of the month. When looking at my router's activity monitor, I noticed that both my 5 iMac 2017K and 1 MacBook Air (M2020) had significant amounts of unexplained network activity. So I installed Little Snitch on both machines to monitor the traffic. In just a couple of days, the Apple News process on the iMac downloaded 375GB and the Mini downloaded 130GB. Specifically, the downloaded traffic occurred under the hostnames apple.news and c.apple.news. They both have valid certificates signed by Apple according to Little Snitch.

The bug is still running Because Apple does not seem to have solved it by releasing a patch for macOS Big Sur and it also affects more and more people. But the way to fix it is pretty easy. Everything goes through iCloud:

The only thing to do is uncheck Apple News to disable iCloud syncing. You can choose to keep the iCloud data on your Mac or delete it during the process. If you delete it, the data will remain on our Mac, iPhone ... etc.
