Apple Obtains Autonomous Car Permit in California

Apple's autonomous car is a reality or seems increasingly close to reality. Especially when a few hours ago we learned that the company has received permission to drive up to three autonomous cars. On the one hand, everything seems to indicate that Apple's Titan project is progressing, but at least in this first phase we will not see a vehicle created 100% by Apple. Actually the vehicles that will perform the test are three Lexus RX450h from 2015, adapted so that Apple adapts its own software that allows the total autonomy of the vehicle. In this way, Apple joins the list of prestigious brands, which previously tested their autonomous vehicles, such as: Google, Tesla, BMW, Honda, Ford, Nissan.

To obtain the permit, applicants need to meet some prerequisites: indicate which vehicle or vehicles will participate in the test and publish a brief report on the distance traveled by the vehicle on the DMV page. The step that Apple is taking is important, since It is a step forward by taking the decision to participate in the autonomous vehicle market.

It also means the confirmation that, at least for now, Apple is not working on the manufacture of a vehicle completely, if not on the software part of it that will allow driving.

Bob mansfield

What is still a secret are the decisions that will be made in the future by the department of Bob mansfield, Apple's autonomous vehicle manager. We do not know if they have planned any alliance with an automotive manufacturer or instead plan to make their way alone. According to internal sources, the company's executives plan to test the new system during 2017 and analyze its viability at the end of it. After these tests, the company will assess whether it continues with the autonomous car project, which in this case is carried with maximum privacy, especially the products presented by the company in recent years.
