Apple recommends restoring your iPhone and Apple Watch if you notice battery or GPS issues

Apple Watch restore

As much as Apple tries «Polish»Your firmwares to avoid failure after updating a device, there are things you cannot avoid. We often install and delete third-party applications, and our device constantly sends and receives amounts of data, and some of it is stored unnecessarily. So once in a while, sweeping under the bed and under the rug is fine.

And the perfect time to do it is restore your device once a year, with each new version of iOS. And it's what Apple now recommends that you do if you've noticed battery drain or GPS issues on your iPhone and Apple Watch.

It has happened to me with my iPhone. After updating to iOS 14, I noticed high battery consumption. Before restoring, I tried to fix it by doing the typical checks for battery check, background locations, etc. and nothing. At the end, i restored the device, I reinstalled the apps, and the problem was fixed.

And it seems that there is another problem with the GPS of the Apple Watch after updating it to watchOS 7. Many users complain that they start a training and when it ends, the Apple Watch has not registered the route taken.

Apple just launched a document of support where it explains that it recommends restore your Apple Watch and your iPhone if you detect that you are missing GPS training routes or health data, or notice high battery consumption, after updating to iOS 14 and watchOS 7.

Restore if you notice any of these symptoms

Apple explains in this document that users may notice the following problems after updating to iOS 14 and watchOS 7:

  • Training route maps are missing in the GPS-enabled iPhone Fitness app from the Apple Watch.
  • Activity, heart rate, or other status-related apps can't start or upload data from your iPhone to Apple Watch.
  • The Fitness app or the Health app cannot start or load data on your iPhone.
  • The Health app or Fitness app reports an inaccurate amount of data storage on your iPhone.
  • The Activity app reports an inaccurate amount of data storage on Apple Watch.
  • Ambient sound level data or headphone audio level data from Apple Watch is missing from the Health app on iPhone.
  • Increased battery drain on iPhone or Apple Watch.

If you notice any of these symptoms, Apple suggests unpairing Apple Watch, backing up both iPhone and Apple Watch, delete both devices and restore from backup. Apple provides the steps to perform these tasks on its support page posted yesterday.

Our colleague Luis Padilla recommends making a clean restoration of your iPhone after updating to iOS 14. In the following video lesson shows you how to do it in a simple and safe way. It is worth losing a little while and doing a restore from scratch. And I say it from my experience.
