Apple Releases New AirPods Beta Firmware for Developers

AirPods Pro

Apart from the launch of all the betas of the software for the different Apple devices, just a while ago those from Cupertino have launched a new beta for developers of the airpods firmware. A firmware intended for AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods Pro and AirPods Max.

Said update still in beta testing phase, improves the automatic switching function, and other minor improvements for Apple wireless headphones.

Developers who test the various beta software for all Apple devices have a lot of work to do. Aside from testing on Macs, iPhones, iPads, and Apple TV, they also have to test the firmware in smaller devices, such as AirTags or AirPods, as in this case.

The new update in the testing phase improves the function of automatic switching and brings other improvements to Apple's wireless headphones. We also know that iOS 16 introduces a new feature called "Custom Spatial Audio" that uses the iPhone's TrueDepth camera to create a "personal profile" for spatial audio. The AirPods beta firmware also includes the LC3 codec for AirPods Max, which enables higher quality audio calls.

It should be noted that this beta firmware is only available for the second generation AirPods, the third generation AirPods, the AirPods Pro and the AirPods Max. The current build number is 5A5304a.

To install beta firmware on AirPods, you need to connect your iPhone to Xcode to activate the Developer menu in iOS. After that, you have to activate the “pre-release beta firmware” button in the Developer menu. According to Apple, AirPods can take up to 24 hours to update after enabling this option.

An essential condition to be able to install the beta firmware on the AirPods is that the iPhone or iPad in which they are paired must have iOS 16 o iPadOS 16, currently also in beta phase.
