Apple removes its "Activation Lock" web tool

Activation Lock Top

Today we echo a news item about security in Apple devices. Until yesterday, users of any Apple device, whether it was iPhone, iPad, iPod or MacBook, we had the opportunity to know if our computer was protected by the "Activation Lock" tool by accessing a website and entering the IMEI of our device.

In this way, we could know if that device is blocked or is being used, especially when our idea was to buy a second-hand Apple device. So we could know the status of the device before even when making the purchase. Something really useful and that now it will no longer be possible.

Now Apple has removed the tool that checked the status of each device from iCloud. It will no longer be possible to perform this pre-purchase check for a second-hand Apple device. Apple's website now returns a "404 NOT FOUND error". And yet the Cupertino-based company has not explained why it removed the utility from its website.

Activation Lock 2

We must remember that this function, was automatically enabled when enabling the known "Find My iPhone", and its role was to prevent anyone else from using an iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Apple Watch or MacBook if it is ever lost or stolen.

To do this, the mechanism known today by Apple was used, an Apple ID and password. In general, it was quite a powerful mechanism and resistant to external attacks, and it was introduced with iOS 7, being available since the last quarter of 2014.

At the moment, more data is unknown, or if Apple plans to rebuild its device security system. We will be aware of the news that Apple brings us. For the moment, we can only say, forever "Activation Lock."
