Apple to switch to random serial numbers on upcoming Mac models

The serial numbers of Apple products use a format that allows us to obtain information about the device such as when and where it was manufactured, information about the model, the quality of storage ... Thanks to these serial numbers, we can know, with a little knowledge and a database where you can check their equivalences.

However, it seems that Apple has grown tired of using this numbering system and throughout 2021 it will begin to use random number of series, which will make it practically impossible to know details of the device. This new numbering will consist of an alphanumeric sequence of between 8 and 14 characters.

In an email from AppleCare, which you have accessed MacRumors, state that its introduction is planned for early 2021 and that it will initially use serial numbers of 10 digits in length. Apple had planned to introduce this measure in early 2020, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, it was forced to delay its implementation by a year.

The products that Apple is currently selling continue to use the traditional numbering, so it is more than likely that the next renovations will be the first to release this new system of random serial numbers. This change only affects Macs and not the IMEI of iPhones.

Upcoming Mac renewal

The latest rumors related to the next event that Apple plans to hold, point to March 23, an event that, like all those held in 2020, will be online. At that event, the launch of AirTags, next-generation iPads, and third-generation AirPods are being launched.

If Apple's forecast is to change the numbering system for Macs in early 2021, it is more than likely that Apple will present some renovation within this range.
