For a few hours, we have available in the Apple Store the new 5k display recommended by Apple for its Mac computers that support this resolution. It is a renewal of the previous model, where this time we can use it to reproduce the content of the iPad Pro on this monitor.
In turn, we can use this screen as second monitor on an iMac Pro, even as a third, because we can connect up to two screens to the iMac Pro, with 5k resolution. On the other hand, although at first we read that the iPad Pro was displayed in 5k, later in a note from Apple it has been denied.
Therefore, this monitor differs little from its predecessor, except for compatibility with more Apple computers. As for the maximum resolutions it can support, it varies depending on the equipment, for example:
- For iPad Pro, we have 4k resolution, that is, 3.840 x 2.160 at 60 Hz.
- For MacBook 12 inches: 5.120 x 2.880.
- El 2014 Mac mini, reaches a maximum resolution of 3.840 x 1.800 @ 60 Hz, (this model still has Thunderbolt 2).
- The latest equipment: iMac Pro, iMac (2017 and following), Mac mini (2018) MacBook Pro (2016) MacBook Air (2018), will have the maximum resolution in 5k.
- El MacBook Pro of 15 inches prior to 2016, will have resolution 4.096 x 2.304
The price of this 2019 screen keeps the price of its predecessor at 1.399€. It depends on the use you are going to give it, this 5k screen is recommended or the 4k model that has been launched again on the market, which is priced at 749€. The team is already available in shop from Apple. The downside is not being able to go to an Apple Store and take the monitor home. You have to buy it to receive it at home and once there, know all its characteristics to assess if you keep it or it does not meet your expectations and return it to Apple.
