How to create a shortcut (alias) on a Mac

Creating an alias for an application, folder or Mac file offers us an easy way to access that element without having to go to its original location. Instead, we can create an alias anywhere and it will run or open the original item immediately, while the original file or application remains in its location. An alias on the Mac works in a similar way to how a shortcut works on Windows and we can place them anywhere on our Mac. Aliases have been available on the Mac for many years, but in recent years they have been replaced by Spotlight, Launchpad and the Dock.

In this article we are going to show you how to create direct access to any file, folder, document or application. First of all, keep in mind that shortcuts in macOS are called Aliases, so it is likely that you have previously searched for this option and have not found it in the entire system. In addition, the method to create them and the location in which they are created leave a lot to be desired, quite the opposite of what happens with any version of Windows.

Create shortcuts on a Mac

  • First of all, we must go to the location of the file from which we want to create a direct access or where the application from which we want to create it is located.
  • Then we go to the file or application in question and click on the right button.
  • Within the contextual menu that is displayed we must select Create Aliases.
  • In the same folder where the documents or applications from which we want to create the shortcuts are located, an icon of the file or application will be displayed with an arrow that goes from the lower right corner to the upper right corner.
  • Now we just have to move that direct access / alias to where we want to locate it to be able to quickly access it without having to navigate between the directories on our Mac.
