Defragment your Mac's disks with iDefrag

One of the things that I missed most in my change from Windows to Mac a long time ago was the possibility of defragmenting the disk with an option integrated into the system that achieved group my files on disk and get some of the lost performance during the time you had been using the equipment. However, after searching through the options in system preferences and utilities, I could not find such an option since Apple ensures that its system does not fragment files the same as other operating systems due in part to its HFS + file system and the integrated capacity of OS X (Adaptative Hot File Clustering), which is not entirely true.

As in all systems after time and a certain number of disk writes despite exist means that avoid this in part, the files are fragmented leaving free spaces that must be 'filled in' with other data and this generally makes the system start to slow down so all the information needs to be regrouped.

For this same reason I have looked for different options to carry out this necessary maintenance task every so often and looking through various forums I found iDefrag, a paid defragmenter but it seemed quite competent in its task and I was not wrong when choosing it. The first thing we see when we run it is a clear interface with our volume hierarchy on the left and a disk map with the range of clusters used on the right.

To begin with, we can also choose the type of algorithm for the reorganization of the disk between Quick, Compact, Metadata, Full…, Except for Quick which performs a somewhat superficial online analysis, the others require that the system be restarted to enter a special mode to access the system disk and be able to defragment it.

If this option gives us a problem, iDefrag also offers us the possibility of create a bootable disk to do it from another drive or from a different partition on the disk, something like a recovery.

The negative part is that its price is around 27 Euros or 13 Euros if we update from a previous version to iDefrag 2. Even with everything, I think that even though it is not an essential program, its acquisition is highly recommended due to the long-term use that we can give it.
