Developers threaten Apple not to release more games for macOS

Apple's desktop platform has never been characterized by offering a large number of games, the majority being available for PC. In recent years, some developers have opted for the Mac platform due to increased sales that the Mac are having, but after the official presentation of macOS Mojave, the developers say that either things change or they leave the platform.

If you had the opportunity to follow the keynote, surely you could check how Apple released the second generation of Metal, a platform with which developers can make the most of the graphics capabilities of Macs. The problem is that in the release notes, Apple announces that it will stop supporting OpenGL, a platform used by most developers to create video game.

Game developers use these platforms as they allow them to take advantage of much of the game, not to say almost everything, when launching versions for different mobile ecosystems, avoiding having to write the application code completely from scratch and Metal is only compatible with iOS and macOS. As Metal has evolved, Apple has left OpenGL aside in its operating systems. The previous version of macOS, High Sierra, offers support for OpenGL in version 3.3, a version that hit the market in 2010. As of today, OpenGL is in version 4.6 that was released last year.

While it is true that some majors Of video games if they have adopted Metal quickly to be able to get the most out of Mac computers, and among which we find titles such as World of Warcraft, The Witness, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Dirt Rally, there are others many developers who don't have the time as to be able to write a new application from scratch because Apple wants to stop offering OpenGL support in the future, without specifying in the macOS Mojave notes when it will.

Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC), not characterized by changing your mind, so it is most likely that only some of the big titles on the market reach macOS, while the titles of independent or smaller developers do not allow us to enjoy their games on our Mac.
