Differences in everyday life between the iPad Air 2 and the 9,7-inch Pro

iPad Pro 2016 renewal

Yesterday afternoon, like so many other times, I was walking through El Corte Inglés in my city. Not because of the clothing section or the book section, although this second one is usually around a lot, but because of the technology section. I like to test and see computers that I will not stop criticizing for their design, operating system, etc. It is what I am going to the Microsoft area, to criticize a little. The point is that in the Apple Store of the store I saw a couple commenting on the differences between the different iPads because they wanted to buy one and did not know which one to choose. The question was between the iPad Pro 12,9, the 9,7 or the Air 2Although the latter almost did not attract them at all.

Well, I was able to help them and informed them of the real differences. They wanted it for leisure and web browsing. Seeing the features and the price difference, they opted for an Air 2. Are we going to notice a difference between this and the Pro of the same size? Is the over-cost of the product worth it? That's what I want to talk about today

iPad Pro in Two Sizes: Too Much for Now

First of all I want to discard the 12,9-inch model from this comparison. I think you should update your hardware to be similar to the small Pro model, as it has better cameras, a True Tone screen, and other exclusive features. In addition, unless you are a professional illustrator or designer, or are going to take advantage of its dimensions in another way, the size can be a bit annoying when it comes to how these "mobile" devices are used. I cannot imagine myself on the sofa with such a large screen, nor can I imagine reading in bed.

The little one is very expensive for the differences it has with respect to the Air 2, that's a bit my vision. The Air doesn't have a Smart Connector or Apple Pencil compatibility, neither does True Tone nor such a good camera, but Does all this justify a jump of almost € 250 more? Keep in mind that the keyboard and the pencil come separately, so there are another almost € 300 that you are going to spend. In the end you reach € 1000 easily. What a Mac costs. It is similar to what we see with Apple Watch Series 2.

I am convinced that there will be many users who do not buy a keyboard of this type nor the Apple Pencil. Yes, the 9,7-inch iPad Pro has more power, but right now it's practically unnecessary. The Air 2 is still powerful and functional as the first day or more.

The software is the same for these iPads

The Air 1 and Air 2 do differ in softare, since in the 2 you can open two applications at the same time and in the other you cannot. Currently with iOS 10 there is nothing the iPad Pro does that the Air 2 cannot, which I was a bit disappointed. I believe in the evolution of the iPad as a substitute for some Mac functions. As a creation and work device, in fact, I write articles and work with it, so I wanted a Pro. But it really isn't worth it, it's a waste of money Today.

If you have an Air 2 that is much cheaper and just as good, buy it a good bluetooth keyboard and if you want a stylus from another brand. You won't have the precision and experience of the Pro with the stylus, but the rest will be the same. If you want to work with him you will do it the same way. There is nothing exclusive about the Pro range that makes the Air 2 superior in utility, more than the Apple Pencil.

If I already said it and my colleague José Alfocea says it, if you are not going to use the pencil you are wasting money. IPads last for many years and stay like new. An Air 2 right now is the best, although it went on sale 2 years ago. Perhaps with future iOS updates I will lose functions that the Pro does have, but for that to come you will have to wait at least 1 year, and even afterwards I doubt that they differ so much.
