Do you really know what you can plug into the Mac's USB C?

The USB C port of the MacBook arrived last year 2016 to stay in the entire range as the port to use for everything. Really the only thing that bothers us about this port for those of us who have a Mac and an iPhone is that an adapter is needed to connect them to each other., the rest of the connections can be made all or almost all without the need for cables or adapters.

But when we need to connect a device and we don't want to do it wirelessly, we can use USB C for it, always with a hub or adapter for whatever we need. In this case we are going to see everything that we can connect to our Mac USB C.

USB C is a USB standard that supports power, data transfer and video output simultaneously so we can use it for everything without problem. If our Mac has at least one USB C port, you can connect it to a USB-C power adapter to charge the Mac without problem. Obviously, this port can also be used with a USB-C to Lightning cable and adapter cables to connect the Mac to other devices and displays when we do not want to connect them via AirPlay. These are some of the connection options offered by the port on our equipment:

  • Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt2 adapter, for connecting select newer MacBook and iMac models to Thunderbolt 2 devices or a Thunderbolt display. See the Apple Support article About the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter.
  • Multi-port USB-C to digital AV adapter for connecting to an HDMI display, a standard USB device, and a USB-C power adapter. See the Apple Support article About the USB-C to Digital AV Multiport Adapter.
  • USB-C to VGA multiport adapter for connecting to a VGA display, a standard USB device, and a USB-C power adapter. See the Apple Support article About the USB-C to VGA Multiport Adapter.
  • USB-C to USB adapter to connect to USB devices such as cameras, printers and USB drives. This adapter cable does not connect to a power adapter. See the Apple Support article About the Apple USB-C to USB Adapter.
  • USB-C to Lightning cable, to connect an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or iPod nano to the USB-C port of the computer to synchronize and charge it. See the Apple Support article About the USB-C to Lightning Cable.
