Activate 'remote disk sharing' on any Mac

cd

This is a trick that owners of a MacBook Air must sound safe, but for the rest it is not so common since we have a SuperDrive unit inside our Mac.

With this trick we can have an extra unit with another computer that we have at home, or save us the repair if for example our Mac is not under warranty. And the above trick is easy to perform. Just put these two commands in the terminal:

defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser EnableODiskBrowsing -bool true
defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser ODSSupported -bool true

With that on We rebooted our Mac and we should have remote disk sharing enabled. And if we want to remove it, the same as before but with false instead of true. Easy, right?

System Preferences-> Sharing-> DVD or CD Sharing says the following:
"This service allows users of other computers to use this computer's DVD or CD drive remotely."

If we already have it in the system ... why use the terminal?

Maybe I have misunderstood, but I think the post refers to us using the disk drive from the Mac, not that other computers use ours (which is what the system preferences allow you).

But I wonder that when you put these commands, do you see another option in the preferences or do you already want to use the other units of other computers in the house? Does it also work with other computers that are not Macintosh as in the M. Air ?

    regards

Indeed it is as Arazal says, it is using the unit from the Mac, not someone using our unit.

Regarding your question, it automatically looks for your home units, and if it goes with Windows or Linux, I can't tell you because I haven't tried it.

I have a problem. I have managed to do it on my macbook and it works great, but when I want to activate it on an old mac mini that core TIGER it won't let me.

That is, I open the terminal, I activate the option to share cd / dvd but when I put the commands in the terminal it does nothing.

When I activated the option on my macbook, just hitting the command (without pressing ENTER) gave me a confirmation that it had worked. but it doesn't happen on my mac mini.

These are the components of the computer
    Machine Name: Mac mini

    Machine Model: PowerMac10,1
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.1)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 1.42 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 1 GB
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.8.9f1
    Serial Number: YM51334XRHU

I hope you can help me

    Thank you

It is that people really surprise me ... because there are people who take the trouble to write because their computer works for them ... like those who have written above, who say that everything works for them on their computer ... why do they have to? guide! is that people go to the trouble of writing down their assets.
