Excel keyboard shortcuts for formatting cells and working with formulas

Once you get used to keyboard shortcuts, it is very difficult to live without them. Thanks to these key combinations, as long as there is a shortcut available for the function you usually use, we avoid having to look away from the screen, so your productivity is not affected.

A few days ago, I published an article where I showed you a series of shortcuts for working with Excel sheets. Today is the turn of another series of shortcuts, this time, shortcuts related to the cell formatting and when creating formulas.

Excel shortcuts for formatting cells

  • Add or remove bold: Command + B
  • Add or remove italics: Command + I
  • Add or remove the underline: Command + U
  • Add or remove strikethrough: Command + Shift + X
  • Apply the currency format: Control + Shift + E (Euro)
  • Apply the percentage format: Control + Shift + Percent sign (%)
  • Apply the date format (day, month, year): Control + Number sign (#)
  • Apply the time format (hour and minute with AM or PM): Control + Shift + At the (@) symbol
  • Insert a hyperlink: Command + K or Control + K
  • Insert a line break inside a cell: Command + Option + Return or Control + Option + Return
  • Insert special characters: Control + Command + Spacebar
  • Align Center: Command + E
  • Align Left: Command + L
  • Show the Format Cells dialog: Command + 1
  • Display the Modify Cell Style dialog box: Command + Shift + L
  • Add a border to selected cells: Command + Option + 0 (zero)
  • Remove outline borders: Command + Option + Dash (-)

Excel shortcuts for working with formulas

  • Expand or collapse the Formula Bar: Control + Shift + U
  • Show the formula builder: Shift + F3
  • Show the formula builder (after adding a function name): Control + A
  • Start a formula: Equal sign (=)
  • Enter a formula as an array formula: Command + Shift + Return or Control + Shift + Return
  • Calculate the active sheet: Offset + F9
  • Insert the AutoSum formula: Command + Shift + T
  • Insert the current date: Control + Semicolon (;)
  • Insert the current time: Command + Semicolon (;)
  • Cancel an entry in a cell or in the formula bar: Escape key
