As always, the first versions of any software suffer from various bugs, some more flagrant than others but ultimately ... failures. OS X Yosemite has not been the exception in this regard and is that several users have discovered a variety of connectivity problems in wireless networks.
These problems range from dropped connections as well as the inability to "go online" even though the computer is connected to the router via Wi-Fi and this if it has access outside as well as strangely low connection speeds. These problems among others seem to occur in a higher percentage in those Macs that have upgraded to Yosemite from OS X Mavericks instead of those that already come standard a "clean" copy of OS X Yosemite, so we can come to think that it may be a problem of incorrect network configuration that is carried over from the previous system, so the solution may lie in correctly configuring the software.
From this point on we will give a general solution to specific problems with which it is possible that some user has a very particular casuistry that does not correspond to this solution, however, it is most likely that most can be solved as long as they are about software related topics. This will involve editing some configuration files, so it is highly recommended to make a backup copy with Time Machine.
Remove network preferences
On some occasions, although it seems a drastic way to proceed, andl delete all .plist files that save the network configurations of the equipment, solve a large part of problems that may have been dragged from a system update. The steps to follow will be to deactivate the Wi-Fi connection, then from the Finder with CMD + Shift + G we will enter the following path:
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/
Inside this folder we will select the .plist files and we will move them to a folder on the desktop as a backup (for what could happen) although if we have the copy in Time Machine there would be no problems.
- com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
- com.apple.network.identification.plist
- com.apple.wifi.message-tracer.plist
- NetworkInterfaces. plist
- preferences. plist
We will return to activate Wi-Fi connection in the wireless menu again. This will force OS X to create all the network configuration files. This may by itself solve the problems, although it is likely that we still have to adjust some customization options in the connection.
Luckily for Time machine, ... deleting the files you say has "broken" the possibility of creating any network interface ...
On my imac, the problem I had was not intermittent wifi or connection cuts, as it worked without problems in a stable way.
The problem was, if the iMac went to sleep, then it wouldn't reconnect.
I've followed your steps and found that for whatever reason, installing Yosemite on Mavericks, it should delete the com.apple.wifi.message-tracer.plist file, since it didn't have it. I imagine that the problem is that it does not detect that it does not have it and does not generate it, despite running the diagnosis (it was the only way to "reactivate" the Wi-Fi).
Now, with the deletion of all the files, the com.apple.wifi.message-tracer.plist has been generated for me, and it no longer fails when it goes into "sleep".
Thanks Miguel Ángel.
I have the same problem that the internet goes down intermittently, it lasts about 5 seconds and goes away, I have made several options and none of them work for me, there is no option to reinstall the previous system?
It goes very slow for me, and after taking him out of rest he tells him a lot of start
Please, someone who can help me. I downloaded the OS X YOSEMITE update to my MacBook Air, and everything worked fine except that I can't send mail from my email address. If I receive emails AND I can also send from the Internet so it is eliminated that it is a server problem.
Pablo
Like César, it appears to me connected, but without internet, I enter the network / diagnostic utility and get it to connect, it lasts between 5 and 10 seconds and it disconnects. Any solution?
Try resetting the SMC (System Management Controller):

What is the procedure to avoid Wi-Fi outages on iPads? There are cuts of approximately 5-10 sec. quite frequently (2-3 times per hour).
Hello, my iMac (updated to YOSEMITE) when it comes out of sleep mode, closes all the apps and restarts, this did not happen to me with the previous version, do you know how I can solve it? Thanks for your help! 🙂
Just mention that after deleting the .plists, you must restart the computer so that it adds the files by default. Works!!
It only worked for me once, then the wifi failed again, what should I do?
I installed Yosemite from scratch on MacBook Air and the Wi-Fi connection sometimes offers inconveniences such as slowness and sometimes it does not connect.
Regarding your deduction that the problem comes from updating Maverics to Yosemite, forgive me but I question it. I will rather wait for the pending update that among others addresses this problem.
Excellent .. what I was looking for worked for me .. connect the time capsule .. after updating to yosemite .. it did not connect ..
Thank you ..
My problem is that the wifi does not appear since I install the yosemite it does not go out and it is not found I will have some fix
Thank you very much. It really works, my problem was that the network preferences panel to connect to the Wi-Fi network did not load, after deleting these files and restarting the machine, it works wonderfully I hope it continues like this
I don't have any of those folders !! : /
Hi. I have had the same problem as all of you with a newly purchased iMac with Yosemite installed. The solution has been to change the wifi channel. You click on the block in the upper left corner, «about this Mac», «system information», you search for «wifi» and you can see all the information on your network. Look at "channel", and if it says 1 call your provider and ask him to put a high channel, 11 or 13, although the best is 11 because 13 gives problems on some machines. In my case, I have been sailing for a few hours now without any problem, without cuts and apparently with more speed than before. I hope this solution is worth it.
Thank you!!!! I solve the problem
This worked perfectly for me in the version of the captain ... After an update it no longer allowed to connect by WiFi only wired, I followed the steps, rebooted the Mac and the matter was fixed
Hello Francisco, the same thing happened to me when installing the captain, and I would be very grateful if you could explain to me what steps you followed to fix it since I can't get it, greetings.
Works! I just did it on my Macbook Air and I no longer disconnect from the WIFI… THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
hi, i have a similar problem, but no wifi icon appears, nor in network preferences. How can I solve. this is what appears to me in wifi when I access "About this MAC" and then "system report"
