The best graphic adventures for Mac

Thimbleweed Park

Graphic adventures became popular in the early nineties with fantastic titles such as the Monkey Island saga, Larry, Indiana Jones to name those that all of us who started to comb gray hair (if we have hair) we know and we have played. As the years went by, this genre practically disappeared from the market.

To this day, it remains very difficult to find adventure games, not to say impossible. Very few are the studios that dedicate resources to this type of games, obviously for economic reasons. Fortunately, we will always have small independent studios to satisfy our desires from the past.

In this article, I have tried to collect the adventure games that we have at our disposal for Mac, graphic adventures as we have always known this type of game, with funny dialogues, different interaction options, and where we have to hit the head to avoid situations, which are sometimes the most absurd.

Also, I have taken the license to add other titles that they can be considered pseudo adventure games, where dialogue is lacking, but it tells us a story where we have to interact with our environment and the characters around us in order to carry out our mission.

If you want to stop wasting your idle hours watching television, or looking for series to watch on Netflix, I invite you to take a look at this compilation of graphic adventures and pseudo adventure adventure available for Mac (Not that there are many other options for PC either). All the games that I show you in this article have the texts translated into Spanish, but, in most, not the voices. If the texts in Spanish are not found, I indicate it in the article.

Thimbleweed Park

Thimbleweed Park

The first thing we have to say about this title is that behind it are lThe same creators of Monkey Island and Manic Mansion, so any resemblance to those titles has a more than simple explanation. As we can read in the game description, Thimbleweed Park is a town with 80 lunatics, set in 1987 and where we have to investigate a crime.

Thimbleweed Park

This game puts at our disposal a team of up to 5 different characters to work as a team and discover why the corpse that has appeared by the river it does not matter to any of the inhabitants of this town. Throughout the game, we have to perform different puzzles to continue discovering what really happens in this town.

Thimbleweed Park offers us two game modes: casual and difficult. Although the voices are in English, the texts are translated into Spanish. In order to enjoy this title, our Mac from is managed by OS X 10.7 or later and a 64-bit processor. It is priced at 21,99 euros in the Mac App Store. If we are Steam users, we can choose to buy it on that platform, since its price is 19,99 euros.

Broken Age

Once again we meet one of the creators, Tim Schafer, behind most adventure games that came to the market thanks to Luscas Film, where he created the Monkey Island saga, Maniac Mansion, Full Throttle, Grim Fandango among others. In order to carry out this project, which hit the market in 2014, he created a Kickstarter campaign that broke records.

Like most of its titles, Broken Age, it offers us beautiful hand-painted graphics and a orchestral soundtrack worth remembering (sold independently on Steam). In this title, we meet Vella and Shay, two teenagers who find themselves in similar situations in different worlds, whom we have to help to face unexpected adventures.

The price of Broken Age on Steam is 12,99 euros while in the Mac App Store is 16,99 euros.

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis

Yes, you are reading well. This classic of adventure games that all of us of an age have played, is available for Mac, in the same version and the same graphics as 1992. But not everything could be pretty since we find two important drawbacks:

  • The game is only available in English.
  • It only works on versions prior to macOS 10.15 Catalina. It should be remembered that this version of macOS no longer offers support for 32-bit applications.

If the language is not a problem, you can choose to install Windows 10 on your computer through Bootcamp, Parallels or VMWare and enjoy this title. When we buy a game on Steam, we buy all versions of the game, that is for Windows, macOS and Linux if that were the case.

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis is available on Steam for 4,99 euros.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

One title you probably enjoyed as a child was Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, a 1989 title that is also available on Steam for 4,99 euros, but with the same drawbacks that we meet in Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is available on Steam for 4,99 euros.

LOOM

Other Lucas Arts titles that reached the video game market in the form of graphic adventure was LOOM, although this it was not as successful as others. Like the two Indiana Jones titles, this game is only available in English and is not compatible with macOS Catalina.

Machinarium

Machinarium puts us in the shoes of Josef, a robot who has to save his girlfriend Berta from the Black Hat Brotherhood. This title, like all those offered by the independent game development studio Amanita Design, is a adventure, exploration and puzzle game with a steampunk aesthetic.

The world of Machinarium, as it makes us understand, is populated only by robots, robots of various forms and with different functionalities. All the backgrounds of the game, like the characters have been hand drawn and communication with the other characters is through animations and symbols.
