Gurman says Face ID will hit the iMac in 2023

Face ID on the iMac

Face ID is the technology that Apple uses to unlock its terminals and purchases through Apple, etc… At the moment we have them on the iPad and iPhone, but the idea is that all the company's devices end up having it. That includes, of course, the cheapest models. But we also talk about Macs and specifically iMac.

At the present time in the Apple environment, two external security modes coexist in Apple terminals: Touch ID and Face ID. Gurman says Touch ID is still an important part of Apple's product line, especially for lower-end models, thanks to it being a "Cheaper alternative" to Face ID while continuing to provide security to users.

However, the idea of this journalist and technology guru, specialized in giving good analysis of Apple and making assumptions about the future of the company and its devices, is that they all end up using Face ID. In his Power On newsletter, he stated that Apple plans to bring Face ID to the Mac within the next "two years."

But I hope that changes over time. It won't happen this year, but I'd bet Face ID on the Mac will arrive in a couple of years. I hope that all iPhones and iPads also go to Face ID within that time frame. Eventually, an in-display camera would help differentiate Apple's more expensive devices by removing the notch at the top. The facial recognition sensor gives Apple two core features: security and augmented reality. Touch ID, more convenient or not, only provides the former.

We have a handicap in this situation: Mac laptop screens are significantly thinner, which makes adjusting depth sensors difficult required for Face ID. We will see whether or not it can be solved.
