OS X has always been characterized as a very simple operating system to handle, although the latest versions of Windows 10 have greatly improved this aspect and it has become much easier both to configure and to work with. Even so, whenever we go into the system preferences, we can find a large number of icons that do not tell us anything, simply because we know that we are never going to use them and all it does is mess up every time we enter the menu System preferences of our Mac with OS X.

Fortunately and unlike Windows, OS X allows us to configure the elements that we want to appear within this menu. In order to configure which elements we want to appear in the Preferences menu, the system must carry out the following steps:

Hide menu items from System Preferences

  • First we go to the System Preferences menu.
  • Once opened, we go to the button next to the buttons that allow us to scroll through the previous and subsequent menu. This button is represented by a 12 points spread over three lines and four columns.

  • To be able to customize the elements that are shown, we must press and hold the mouse on that button and scroll to the end of the menu to select the option Customize now.

  • Below will be shown the icons in the System Preferences menu with a blue box, which will indicate which applications are currently being shown. If we want to hide any of the applications, we just have to discard the boxes of the applications that we want to stop showing.
  • Once the applications to hide are unchecked, we must press the OK button so that the new elements are hidden and the remaining elements are redistributed.
