How to change the audio output source in OS X

Depending on the type of Mac we use, be it a mini connected to a television or monitor, be it a laptop connected to an external monitor and a stereo or any other configuration, from the operating system itself we can establish where we want the sound that is played on our Mac to come out. While it is true that the Mac speakers are not bad, they could have a little more power, we can take advantage of the equipment to which we have the Mac connected to reproduce the audio. For example, we can use the speakers of our television instead of the integrated ones that the Mac Mini carries.

If we have our Mac connected to a stereo with an amplifier, we can send the audio output when we connect a movie to be heard through the equipment, in order to better enjoy it. Whenever we connect a peripheral to our Mac, OS X recognizes it and classifies it according to what type it is. If we have a television and a stereo connected to our Mac, both devices will appear in the Sound section to be able to select them as output for content playback.

Change audio output source in OS X

  • First we have to go to System preferences. Normally we find it in the Dock, but if it is not your case, you can access it by opening the Launchpad and looking for the gear wheel that represents this option.
  • In the box that will appear, we will click on the Sound option, located in the second row of options.
  • Three options will be shown below: Sound Effects, Output, and Input. Click on Exit so that they show all the devices that we have connected to our Mac and so we can reproduce the sound.
  • Now we just have to select the device, adjust the balance and output volume.

Hello, when you say "connect an iMac" for example, what output of the iMac do you mean ... ??? I have an iMac connected to a stereo, but I do it from the headphone output to the aux input. of the equipment… .. and when I read you I don't know if it can be connected through another port…. hence my question.

    Salu2.

I particularly have a Mac Mini and I have it connected via HDMI to a television. Depending on what I'm interested in, I can select whether I want the audio to be played through the Mac Mini's speaker or through the TV speakers. As you have it connected, you cannot select the type of output unless you connect a monitor or tv to the imac and you would like to reproduce the audio there.

It fails me that I cannot select two devices - eg hdmi output and also the integrated speakers.
