How to create a more secure password on our iPhone and iPad

Taking advantage of the enormous controversy surrounding the iPhone of the "San Bernardino shooter", today we will see that it is possible to keep our privacy and our personal data and information much more secure thanks to the option it offers us iOS 9 to create a password much more difficult to guess and therefore much more secure.

A more secure password on your iOS device

Apple defends our privacy to the maximum, or at least that is what all its users trust. Therefore, in addition to not storing the password (unlock code) of our devices, with iOS 9 introduced two new ways to encode that code.

Until then, we could only configure one password of four digits, similar to the PIN of credit or debit cards, which provided 10.000 possible combinations, however, with iOS 9 it introduced the six-digit code that raises these possible combinations to 1.000.000, making it much more difficult to decipher.

But the iOS operating system offers an option to configure a password even more secure by using an alphanumeric code formed by the combination of letters and numbers, even more difficult to decipher.

In addition, we must not forget that if we have Touch ID configured, once 48 hours have passed without use or after the device has reopened, it will ask us for the password, so the security, if it is not maximum, is very close.

If you still have an unlock code or password of only 4 digits, today we will teach you how to change it for a new one, lest the FBI give you to snoop on your iPhone. To do this, you just have to follow the following steps:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Select "Touch ID and password" ..
  3. If you have already activated a passcode, you will need to enter it to access the passcode options.
  4. Select "Change password" and re-enter the password that you already have configured.
  5. On the screen where you are asked to enter a new access code, click on "Access code options", located just above the numbering.
  6. Select the "Custom alphanumeric code" option. You can also select "Custom Numeric Code" for a numbers-only access code.
  7. Enter your chosen password. It can include numbers, letters, and symbols.
  8. Click on «Next».
  9. You will be asked to enter the same password again to check the spelling. Enter it again and press "Done".

After you have entered a alphanumeric password or change the passcode, Apple will ask you to use the new passcode as your iCloud security code, which is used to protect passwords stored on your iCloud Keychain. Click on "Use the same code" to change it or "Do not change the security code" to continue using the access code that you have configured for it.
