How to disable the startup password in OS X Yosemite

login-osx

Something that many users are demanding in the new OS X Yosemite is the option to remove the boot password of our Mac and this is what we are going to see now. First of all comment that removing this startup password reveals our Mac, that is, if we lose it all our data will be exposed since anyone will be able to enter the Mac without the password.

While it is true that setting the password every time the Mac is started or simply when it comes back from sleep is a nuisance, it can save us from some annoyance, everyone is free to activate or deactivate this password to their liking and now we will see how do what. Our advice is to change the password for a simpler one and not delete it completely but that is not decided by us, so let's see step by step how to remove this password but before doing anything I recommend reading the entire tutorial well and then if we see it clear to carry it out on our Mac following the steps.

Well, the first thing we are going to consider is whether we activate in the Yosemite FileVault installation. If we have it activated we must disable it completely for our purpose. To deactivate Flievault we are going to System preferences and click on Security and privacy, then we unlock the padlock in the lower corner and we deactivate FileVault. This process may take a few minutes since it requires decrypting the disk, wait and do not despair.

password-start-1

Once this is done we can now dedicate ourselves to eliminating the password request directly, for this we will go to System Preferences> Security and Privacy again we will unlock the padlock if it was closed to access the options and click on the tab General, now we have to click on the button Change Password… and put the one we currently have which is the iCloud one. We use another, the one we want (this new password is important to remember since it will be the one that is registered for the activities on the Mac, such as unlocking the lock) and uncheck the box Request password after X minutes of starting sleep or screensaver if we want that when our Mac returns from sleep it does not ask us for the password.

password-start-3

password-start-4

password-start-5

Be careful with the new password, it is important not to forget it eh!

Now we can directly access the System preferences again and click on Users and groups, click on the padlock again if it is closed and unlock it, for this it will be necessary to enter the new password that we put in the previous step, once unlocked we can click on Login Options in the left column and access the dropdown Automatic login (before in light gray without access) where we can choose our username on the Mac so that it boots without password.

password-6

password-start-2

And that's it!

I can't do it by following the tutorial

The Mac unlock password is our iCloud password when we install OS X Yosemite and in some cases it may be necessary to unlink the Mac password to change the iCloud password, that is, change iCloud password from the Mac and in this case it is necessary to follow a few previous steps before doing anything.

For this we have to access directly from System Preferences to Users and Groups and where our account appears click on Change iCloud password. With the lower lock unlocked, we must change the iCloud password to unlink it from our Mac. Be careful because what this action does is modify the password of our iCloud account and once the step is done this will be the password that we will have on all the devices linked to our Apple ID, Apple will send us an email to our Apple ID warning of the change.

Once the password has been changed by following the steps that appear (including adding the answers to security questions about our Apple ID), it only remains to follow the tutorial above in order, first deactivate FileVault if we have it activated and then the rest of the steps .

Good! First of all I must say that your page is proving very useful to me to adapt to the Mac. I have only had it for 2 days and I am a bit lost with so many password. I have a doubt, which is possibly silly, but before messing it up I prefer to ask. I just activated password login and my question is: is it the same as the one used to open the lock and make system preference changes? Thank you

I just can't disable FileVault, it appears "encrypting" and like a loading bar, I left it like this overnight and the same thing appears, and it won't let me disable it because it needs to finish encrypting the disk.
I do not know what to do

    1.    Milciades Diaz said

The same thing happened to me. For updating I am in trouble. Apple support does not operate and gives silly recommendations that do not work. Thank you. Milciades

Hello, good I have 2 days to open the group and users lock, I have changed the password, I have reinstalled the operating system again, I have followed, the steps you tell me, I have even relapsed with command + s, and entered the fields for prescription and nothing, when logging in, I enter my data and passwords, but the padlock does not unlock any solution please

    1.    Jordi Giménez said

Good Daniel, that password of the padlock is not known by anyone else except you since it is used together with the name of the team. If you do not remember there is no way to do the tutorial to deactivate the startup password, I am sorry.

Hello Julián, if you do not go out to update Yosemite on OS X that you already have, try this: https://www.soydemac.com/como-instalar-de-cero-os-x-yosemite-10-10/

      You already tell us!

Well, everything is very well explained, but it has been encrypting for hours, and it won't let me deactivate it ... the computer is new, it doesn't have so much information ...

    1.    Jordi Giménez said

Hello Cristina, you have to deactivate the FileVault that you probably activated when configuring the Mac at startup. You can do this from System Preferences> Security and privacy> FileiVault

      Regards!

Hello my mac only appears general and firewall does not appear filevault or privacy
I already gave it recovery but instead of getting the apple I get a padlock and in the preferences it asks me for a password without putting anything on it, I give it enter and the password opens and closes instantly I don't remember it

    1.    Jordi Giménez said

Hello Oliver, the password is necessary to carry out this step with the Mac. You have to remember it if not it does not allow you to follow the steps.

      You already tell us 😉

  10.   Luis (@ luisen72) said

Thanks, following the tutorial I have done it without problems. One note, you can put the same password that you already use in iCloud as the "new" one, so you won't forget it 😉

    1.    Jordi Giménez said

The truth is that using the same passwords is not very advisable having 1password-style applications at our fingertips. Although it is true that in this case it is your Mac and others, but ... hehehe

      Greetings and thanks for reading!

Well, my problem is that I want to install the wacon driver on my new iMac but a message tells me that it is not possible because my security preferences do not allow it. In the security and privacy preferences in the general window I tell you to open the pkg. The padlock is locked and I cannot unblock it because I do not remember having entered the password it asks for. Is there a way to "remember" the password?

THIS TUTORIAL HAS ENDED IN NIGHTMARE !!!!

don't follow it, deactivate firevaulte, it can take HOURS AND HOURS AND HOURS and it doesn't say so here !!! now it has been marked in decrypting firevault 6 hours ago and it still does not finish I have not been able to work all day and WORSE I want to do something, it asks me for the pass and it says ALL PASSES incorrect! I just installed everything and I will have to REINSTALL EVERYTHING AGAIN !!!

  14.   Jordi Giménez said

Hi Diego, I'm sorry this tutorial didn't help you, but no one else seems to have had any problems and I did it myself in the tutorial and zero problems.

If it is noticed that the decryption may take time, but that always depends on everything you have on your Mac and that is why I say: »This process may take a few minutes as it requires decrypting the disk, wait and do not despair ...».

I hope you solve it and if you have any questions or we can help you in something, do not hesitate to send your questions here.

    Greetings mate

    What can i do thanks

Ok if you want to recover the encrypted user or the system has a password there is a classic way to do it,
when turning on the OSX system they crush CMD + S
      will enter console mode
there once the console is opened they will write the following:
      / sbin / fsck -y (enter)
/ sbin / mount -uaw (enter)
      rm /var/db/.applesetupdone (enter)
      reboot
make sure you write well look at the spaces and symbols and obviously not type enter, it is to tell you to press enter.
Once I reboot it will call the startup sequence, as if they had just installed the OSX system,
There they configure a new user, they put a basic password perhaps 123.
They will have this master user that they have just created, enter System Preferences (nut icon), then Users and Groups (In that window in the left corner there is a padlock, they unlock it with the password they created at the beginning, and they will be able to see the others Users and as it is master will be able to modify their passwords also modify their passwords with something easy to agree on.
Or they can also leave it empty and the password will be nothing - empty, they only give enter and it could enter, they will get a security warning, they accept it and everything is ok.
Obviously, when they modify the password of the other users, the original keychain will be lost unless they know their password, which they obviously don't know if they weren't looking for help here.
Entering an encrypted user you will be able to see their files, photos, etc., desktop, etc., you will be able to modify them, delete them, etc., but their encrypted keys on the keychain such as web passwords, email passwords and other web user passwords cannot be accessed.
So when you enter the safari or another browser from the decrypted user, a keychain warning will appear that will annoy you as many times as depending on the number of web passwords that the decrypted user has been using.
this system always works I have tested it since os 10.6 snow leopard; 10,7 Lion; 10.8 Lion mount; 10.9 Maverick; 10.10 Yosemite (the latter the updated versions, the beta versions do not come with access to console mode) and I just tried it on CAPITAN 10.11. beta 15A279b updated developer version and can also access these settings.

      Hi carmen,

It all depends on what you have on your Mac, if it is full of info it usually takes a long time so do not close the process and be patient.

one common login commands for OSX system
Cmd + S: start in console mode and once entered you should programs to delete the user.
ALt: system startup sequence will show the disks and partitions you want to start with icons

Apparently you have no system, when it starts with the icon of a folder with a question mark, it is because there is no system,
check that the partitions and the system exist and you do that by pressing ALT when turning on until the partitions appear.

Now the username has been adjusted and the password is accepted, to later request a name and password, entered a name that used to be automatic plus a password, from then on it does not enter the system and requests a name and password again, try to start with the id or change the password, being able to do both, but when entering the password the same thing happens when asking for a name and password.
