How to do a clean install of OS X El Capitan

We start here a classic, how to install OS X El Capitan from scratch and thus eliminate from our Mac any trace of garbage and / or small errors that may have accumulated after successive updates. The process is very very simple and similar to the one we have detailed with previous versions of OS X although, yes, it will require a good deal of time. So sit back leisurely in front of your Mac and let's start making it perfect to enjoy the improved performance of El capitán.

Installing OS X El Capitan 10.11 from scratch

The quickest and easiest option is to update however, if it has been a long time since you performed a clean installation, from scratch or, worse still, if you have never done it, the time has come; you will gain space and, above all, you will gain in fluidity and efficiency, and this, together with the performance improvements of OS X El Capitan that it can make our Mac up to 40% faster, it can be amazing.

  1. Update your Mac to OS X El Capitan 10.11 And meanwhile, look at home for a pendrive of at least 8GB that you don't need, you will need it.
  2. Download and install DiskMakerX. DiskMaker OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 Photos
  3. At the same time, also download the full OS X installer from the Mac App Store, remember that there are a few say so it will take a while depending on your internet connection but in the meantime, you are preparing.
  4. While it is downloading, check your Mac: put everything in its place, check the downloads folder, delete what you don't need and pass a "clean" of the type clean my mac.
  5. When the installer of OS X El Capitan 10.11 has finished downloading, close it.
  6. Plug the USB of at least 8GB into your Mac.
  7. Opens DiskMaker and follow the process. It's very simple and with just three or four clicks you will have your El Capitan bootable USB ready.
  8. Now remove the OS X installer from your Mac (it's in the "Applications" folder).
  9. Make a backup with time Machine (or how you usually do it, although due to its extreme ease and comfort I always recommend doing it by Time Machine). Time Machine backup
  10. Made the copy, go to "System Preferences" → "Startup disk" → Select the bootable USB you have created → Press "Restart". Your Mac will restart directly from the installer OS X The Captain 10.11
  11. In the top menu, click on "Utilities" → "Disk Utility" → Select the main disk of your Mac → Press delete. Now your Mac is clean of everything.
  12. Exit Disk Utility
  13. Begin the installation process as usual. Just follow the steps indicated on the screen.
  14. When the process is complete, one of the screens will offer you the option to Transfer a backup from Time Machine. Select this option and wait.

AND READY! When the process is finished you will have your Mac as new, with a clean installation of OS X El Capitan 10.11, you will have won free gigs (check it out) and it will work much more fluid than before since it does not drag “junk” from previous updates.

A clean installation is certainly a recommended option. The question is, now, how to reinstall the usual applications that we had again: can they be recovered from the Time Machine copy?
Or is it better to reinstall / configure them again with all that takes time?

    Thanks for your review

Hi Perich. If you want to do a 100% clean installation, your thing is to go to the "Purchased" tab of the Mac App Store and press "Install" on all those that you want to install again, in reality it will take practically no time.
If you choose to dump a Time Machine backup, you will have absolutely nothing to do.
I just installed El Capitan from scratch, without backup, and it is what I recommend the most at the moment.

What about non-app store programs like autocad or photoshop? would you have to reinstall them?

Hello, I have followed the steps to create a bootable USB disk with DiskMaker X5 but it creates it without problem although it is not recognized by the system. In "startup disk" does not appear the USB or pressing alt when booting.

I have followed Apple's steps and I have done it by commands; the installation disc is created without problems but it is not recognized either. I do not know what to do. I've downloaded the El Capitan app five times and nothing.

I run the USB installer and in «Window» «installer registration» appears:
