How to force the execution of an application on Intel that has been created for Macs with M1

Apple silicon

When launching Apple Silicon, developers had to change the architecture of their app to accommodate M1. For those who have not yet achieved it, Apple created Rosetta. This will help us to be able to do the reverse path. Run an app on Intel when it was created to work natively in M1.

If you have a Mac with M1, surely you are already uusing Rosetta without knowing it. The first time you open an app that needs it, an alert will appear telling you that that programming language is needed and will ask for your permission to install it. In this way and from that moment, when needed, the Mac will use the same resource automatically.

You may wonder why we might want to use an application in its Intel version when Apple bets on Apple Silicon and the M1 chip. Easy. Certain applications may have add-ons or add-ons that only work on your Intel version although the App itself works wonderfully on the new Macs.

Just like Macs use Rosetta to be able to adapt those Intel applications on new Macs, you can do the reverse way. Use the programming language so that an App created natively for Apple Silicon, runs on Intel.

Let's see what are the steps to follow:

  1. Find the app in your Applications folder.
  2. Select the app, and then tap Cmd + I (or right click and use the 'File' menu and select 'Get Info'). This will open an information window with details about the app.
  3. In that window, look for a box called "Open using Rosetta". Check the box.
  4. Close the window.
  5. If you had the app open, close it and reopen it.

Now when you open this app, your Mac will run the Intel version from the software and will use the translated layer. If you want to stop using Rosetta, you will have to repeat the instructions and uncheck the box.
