How to install OS X Mavericks from scratch

os-x-mavericks

The first thing we recommend before launching to perform a zero restoration of our Mac and therefore eliminate everything it contains, is to inform us if our Mac is compatible with this version of OS X launched yesterday by Apple and if it is compatible we recommend make a backup of all the data that is important to us such as photographs, iPhoto galleries, files, emails, etc., either with Time Machine or on another external drive. We already commented on some of the previous steps in a previous post and we recommend your reading before doing anything on our Mac.

Once our data is backed up, we need a USB device with a minimum of 8GB of memory to create our own OS X Mavericks installer. Well, now let's see what are the next steps to install the operating system 'clean'.

Prepare the USB

The first thing we must do is download OS X Maverics for free and while it is downloading we can format the USB with the name we want in my case (USBMAVERICKS) and then we mark it in the drop-down as Mac OS Plus (Journaled) and accept.

Then we have to access the Terminal and enter the following command:

sudo / Applications / Install \ OS \ X \ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia –volume / Volumes / USBMAVERICKS –applicationpath / Applications / Install \ OS \ X \ Mavericks.app –nointeraction

In the text line the name USBMAVERICKS that each add the name that he gave to his USB.

OS X Mavericks

Installation of our operating system

Now we have to connect the USB and start our Mac by pressing the alt key while it boots.

When this boot we will have to click on our USB, in this case USBMAVERICKS and select 'Disk Utility'. Now it's time to do the formatting of our hard drive and for this we will click on the 'delete' tab and after making sure that the format is Mac OS Plus (Journaled) we delete it.

Once we have the hard drive formatted, we only have to close the 'Disk Utility' and return to the 'OS X Utilities' where we will click on 'Install OS X' on the hard drive or partition that we want to have OS X Mavericks installed.

Now we only have to configure our Mac and enjoy this free update for everyone

I installed from scratch, but I cannot activate "find my mac", as it tells me that the necessary recovery partition does not exist ... do you know how to fix it?

Jordi, reinstall on top of the one already installed without using disk utility again to erase anything? I have the same problem as Rodrigo with Find my Mac and the recovery partition. Thank you

Hi Raul, it is best to reinstall from scratch again repeating the clean installation process so that it creates the partition automatically, but if you do not want to install everything again, you can also do what comrade IVANVALO44 says.

Hello and how do we act with the Bootcamp partition?

    1.    Jordi Giménez said

If you restore from scratch you have to recreate the partition. You may find it more profitable to just 'Update'. regards

The code is wrong. This way they will only get a message of "sudo: / Applications / Install: command not found"

    Should be:
    sudo / Applications / Install OS X Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia –volume / Volumes / USBMAVERICKS –applicationpath / Applications / Install OS X Mavericks.app –nointeraction

… And of course, change USBMAVERICKS for whatever you want.
Comment not intended to offend, OK?

Hi Jordi, if I have a snow leopard system, can I update it to mavericks?

    1.    Jordi Giménez said

Hi Moni, it depends on your Mac model and not on the operating system you currently have installed. But it is almost certain that you will be able to update.

What Mac are you currently using?

Greetings. I bought an iMac that comes pre-installed with the Yosemite. And apparently you can't downgrade to Mavericks. Does anyone know if this is true? I already tried to install it from an external disk but a not allowed symbol appears and the computer restarts again. grrrrr
