There can be no greater fear for a user than to think that we have lost data from a backup copy or the entire copy. Reading in forums, we even found users who made the copy with two and three different systems, in case one of them failed. Nowadays, with the information in the different services in the cloud, we are making a backup without us noticing. But still It doesn't hurt to know if our latest copy is corrupt or, on the contrary, is 100% available.
If you are one of those who use Time Machine for your copies, these tips will save you from more than one trouble.
First of all, this method works with Mac OS X Capitan and Mac OS Sierra versions of the operating system.
To do this you have to follow these simple steps:
- Make sure that the disk where you make the copies is connected to our Mac in the usual way, either wirelessly or by cable.
- In the Mac menu bar, the application symbol appears. If you do not have it, you must access from settings and select the option «Show Time Machine in Menu bar». Then, click on the icon that is an analog clock with a circle that indicates the opposite direction to the needles of the clock. Once the menu is displayed, press the Alt key and press «verify backup»
The process starts. The duration of the same varies as always, the size of the backup and the ability of our Mac to read the information of our copy. The system will alert the user if it has encountered any problems or errors. In the event of a problem, the operating system will offer solutions to correct the problem.
Another way to perform the same task is by accessing terminal and inserting the following command:
tmutil verifychecksums / path / to / backup
However, you can continue to trust Time Machine, as it is one of the most reliable programs out there.
