How to prevent videos from playing automatically in Safari

Playing videos automatically on some web pages is one of the worst things that have been invented, but it is more and more common to find web pages with this type of videos with sound, which all they do is annoy and piss off the user. You sure are with me on this. Fortunately, a hidden setting in Safari allows us to disable the automatic playback of videos, so If you are fed up with this type of multimedia content with automatic playback, Next we are going to show you how to access the hidden menu and be able to deactivate the automatic reproduction of the videos.

Disable autoplay of videos in Safari

This option deactivates the automatic reproduction of the videos in Safari, so if we want to reproduce any video that is shown on the web page we are visiting we're going to have to interact with it by activating playback, for this we just have to click on the play button. It may not suit your needs, so you can turn this option on and off to see if it's really worth it or not.

  • First of all we must activate the hidden menu by accessing the Terminal and writing the following script:

defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeInternalDebugMenu 1

  • Now we restart the Safari browser, if we had it open. Next we go to the Debug menu, located at the end of the Safari options.
  • Within the Debug menu, we go to Media Flags and select Disable Inline Video.

It is not necessary to restart the browser to verify that it works. If you regularly visit a web page that plays videos automatically, visit it and you will see how the video will have stopped automatically and will not play until you click on the video in question. Both YouTube and Vimeo are also affected by this little trick, so some people may not be quite amused by the utility it presents, but of course you cannot have everything in life and to everyone's liking.
