Do you have a large image and you need to resize it or it takes up less space and you don't know how to do it on Mac? It is something very simple but at the same time practical, and for which it will not be necessary to install any third-party application, since for years macOS has included a tool capable of, among other things, modifying the size of an image of quick way.

And we are not talking about another beyond Preview, the default image viewer for macOS and that it has many more functions than its name indicates, and in fact allows you to add content in a basic way to your images, although for now we are going to focus on the possibility of resizing an image.

Resize a photo on Mac without installing anything with Preview

As we mentioned, this is a really easy process to carry out, since it is not very long or requires a lot of knowledge on the subject. To resize an image from your Mac, just follow these steps:

  1. Open the image you want to resize using Preview. If you haven't changed anything, you should be able to open it with this Apple tool just by double-clicking on the file, but if it opens with another program, you just have to click with the right mouse button and, in the submenu, use the "Open with" option to open the image with Preview.
  2. Once inside, you must find edit button. It is represented by the icon of a pen, and it is located in the upper right, right next to the search bar.
  3. When you press it, you will see that a new bar appears below it, with a multitude of editing tools. Locate the resize icon, which is the one represented by a square with arrows to enlarge.

  1. Once you have done this, a small box will appear, in which you can configure the new size you want to give to the image in question. For this, what you will have to do is write the value you want it to have in width or height and choose the unit (usually pixels). In principle, it is only necessary that you write one of the two values, since in this way the other will be generated based on the proportions of the initial image, so you will avoid it being deformed in case you see it happen to you. You can also take advantage if you want and modify the resolution (in pixels / inch), or if you want you can also choose one of the settings selected by Apple to take less time, at the top.

  1. When you have done this, click on the "Accept" button, and you will see how the image automatically resizes, and next to the name of the image, at the top, it indicates that you have modified the photo.
  2. Now you only need to save the modified image. For this you have two different options:
    • If you only wanted to change the size of the image, you can go, in the toolbar at the top, towards "File", and then select the option "Save". When you do this, the image you had before will automatically be overwritten, so the one you will find in the previous location will be this, with the new dimensions and a smaller size.
    • On the other hand, in case you also want to change the file extension, something that can also help you reduce its size, what you can do is click on the option "File" in the toolbar at the top, and then use the option "Export ...". You can choose the format, and, in some cases like JPEG (recommended in case of doubt), you can also modify the quality of the image, as well as the path where you want the resized image to be saved.

As you will see, in this relatively simple way you will be able to resize any image from macOS, without having to install anything, a process that is very easy to carry out once you get used to it. Also, if you are interested you can also do it with multiple images at the same time, as we explain in this other tutorial.

Hello! I would like to ask you a question. My original image is 3840 x 2160 and I need to make it 1920 x 1280. Doing it this way makes the image warp. How can I bring it to that ratio without deforming? Obviously I would have to cut it right? how can I do it? could you give me a hand? Thank you
