iMove now supports the HEVC format of macOS High Sierra

One of the novelties that Apple announced at the last developer conference but which went almost unnoticed were the new video and photo recording formats EVS and HEVC. And I say they went unnoticed because until just a few days ago, those new formats had not been able to show us all the benefits that Apple claimed. These new formats compress both video and photographs without loss of quality, occupying practically half of the amount up to now. As is logical with the launch of a new format, little by little the applications must be updated to be compatible with it and the first to do so was iMovie, Apple's video editor.

With the release of the final version of macOS High Sierra, Apple has taken the opportunity to release an update for the video editor offered free to all Apple users: iMovie. With this update, iMovie is brought to version 10.1.7 offering compatibility with the new HEVC videos of macOS High Sierra. All users who already enjoy iOS 11 have had to wait for the launch of macOS High Sierra to be able to edit videos in this format directly without having to perform a conversion in the process.

HEVC, also known as H.265, reduces the space occupied by videos in the H.264 format by up to half, a format used by Apple on all its devices and platforms until now, and that will continue to be used since the option to record videos in HEVC format is only available from iPhone 7 onwards. Mac models sold throughout this year can play 4K content made in this format with hardware acceleration. For mid-2015 and earlier models, I can only play videos recorded in this format at a resolution no higher than 1080 at 240 fps.

iMovie requires macOS 10.2.2 or laterIt requires 2,14 GB of space on our hard drive and is available in Spanish, in addition to other languages. As I mentioned above, iMovie is available for free to all users who have an Apple ID, even if they have not renewed their device in recent years.
