Install new fonts in OSX

How to install fonts in OS X

I remember when I switched to Mac: the first thing I did after taking out my 24 ″ iMac and turning it on was… taking my phone and asking a contact from my MSN how to enter MSN Messenger from the Mac. My contact recommended me to use Adium, so I looked for it on the internet, downloaded it and ... How do you install a program? The thing is not without grace, because it is as simple as dragging an icon to the Applications folder and in that program there was precisely a drawing that more or less explained it. It is what has to change the platform. Now that I'm on Mac, everything is simpler, like Install new fonts.

Either I'm wrong (and this is very possible) or in Windows it was not so simple. On Mac everything is much easier and that can be a problem if we are used to turning the operating system around and a half to perform the simplest actions. Installing new fonts that are good for what we want to write at a certain time is very intuitive, but what is someone who had to ask on their mobile how to start using their Mac tell you ... To avoid any doubt, we will explain the step by step process.

How to install fonts in OS X

Installing fonts in OS X

  1. We download the font.
  2. We go to the folder where we have downloaded the file. Most commonly, a compressed file has been downloaded.
  3. Unzip the file by double clicking on it.
  4. Now we double click on the .TTF file.
  5. In the window that opens we can see how the font will look. If there is more than one style, such as bold or italic, you can see it by clicking on the drop-down menu that says Regular in the image.
  6. Finally, we click Install font and wait.

It is already installed and, if we wish, we can enlarge or reduce the letters to see how they will be.

Where to download text fonts for OS X?

DaFont Fonts

To search for sources, in Soy de Mac we recommend DaFont, but you can search on another page if you know it and so wish. The font that I have included in the images is from DaFont but, as I also like filled letters, I have also done something that you can do: if you know what the letter in question is called or how it can be called, you can make a internet search.

Download DaFont font

It is about looking for the name you want accompanied by the word "font". In my case, I searched for "iron maiden font." The first ones that I found were the same that you can see in the images, but I have found one with the filled letters called Metal Lord.

How to view text fonts installed on your Mac

If you are one of those users who like to change any corner of your operating system, surely you end up installing many types of fonts. And what happens if later we don't remember what we have installed? Well, no problem. We can always take a look at the fonts that we have installed. For this we only have to do the following:

OS X Launchpad

  1. We open the Launchpad by clicking on it or making the gesture of closing 3 fingers on the trackpad (we can also go to the Applications folder).
  2. We click on the Others folder.
  3. We open the Typographic Catalog.

Open font catalog on Mac

As you can see in the image, we have 3 options:

  • All fonts. As its name suggests, we will see them all there.
  • Computer. In this section we will see the fonts that are installed with the default system.
  • User. This is the section that interests us in this case. Although it is also true that we can see what type of letters the computer had right out of the box, it is also true that it is not worth uninstalling any. We can look to see what typefaces there are, but nothing else. In the User section we can also see the ones that we have installed. If there are any that we are no longer interested in, we can right-click or right-click and select Delete family «Type of font», where between quotes will put the type of font that you are going to delete. In the case of the example, Metal Lord (which, logically, I am not going to eliminate or crazy).

How to delete a font in OS X

So now you know. If you want to write with letters with more personality, you just have to add the typefaces. When writing this entry I have remembered that in my Windows stage I used one that I really liked: the lyrics of the Metallica singer James Hetfield, which appears in all the images where he writes his lyrics. I'm going to keep an eye on the web to see if I can find it. What type of font is your favorite?

PS: I found the source for Hetfield. It's called "Anger Scratched."

Hi, I have my new mac with OS X El Capitan version 10.11.5. At first I had installed fonts without problems in the typeface catalog, but now, all the fonts that I try to install inevitably give a serious error. Those same fonts, downloaded from DaFont, I have loaded without problems on my old mac. I have tried uninstalling some of the ones that I had managed to do before and reloading it but now I can't, the red icon of a serious error appears. I can't change the fonts because they are from jobs that were already started. What I can do?

The same thing happens to me Mariana! I do not know how to fix it! did you manage to solve it?

The same thing happens to me.
There is no way… Also they are not automatically loaded in the Typeface Catalog, but they do it when I install the next one. Although they are properly installed (I do it 4 by 4 in case one is corrupt and gives problems), they do not appear in Microsoft Office programs or in iWork programs (Keynotes, etc). I can only use them in Photoshop. It's very frustrating, really.
