Is it worth upgrading to OS X El Capitan?

osx-el-captain-1

This afternoon I began to review some comments from social networks, questions to the mail and others and saw users who are not clear right now whether or not to update to the new OS X El Capitan. Obviously, and differentiating users from these undecided people who, due to hardware issues (Mac that does not allow its installation), cannot update, my answer to the question in this post is obviously, yes, update and the sooner you do it the better.

It is not a novel operating system change in terms of interface level or new options available, okay, we have changes and numerous improvements in various system tools that we all already know but in addition to that lagging behind when it comes to updates is never good.

osx-el-captain

I have wanted to launch this reflection for a long time totally personal to the air and is that many people ask me what I think about the option of staying in an old operating system on the Mac for fear of the new or 'unknown'. My answer is always that if you have the option to update do it, do not be left behind and take advantage of the fact that you can have the latest in safety and productivity in your machine.

With the arrival of the OS X El Capitan operating system, many are those who tell me that having few changes (aesthetic I imagine) do not feel the urge to update ... One thing is clear, Apple does not add functions as new as it did in the change from OS X Mavericks to OS X Yosemite, but I can guarantee that your machine will run better on OS X El Capitan than any other system due to the vast improvement implemented and invisible to the human eye, optimization of the operating system. For this alone it is worth updating, so if your machine allows it, don't wait any longer and update.

Are you one of those who refuses to update or, on the contrary, you jump in from the first moment?

If you are one of those who have updated and want to be aware of the latest news of this system, do not miss the OS El Capitan news section.

I already made the update is fantastic, just a comment and it is to make a backup of emails if you use something other than Mac Mail. Microsoft is verifying the reason for not letting the outlook run in X Captain.

OSX El Capitan 10.11.2 fixed many errors, now the startup and shutdown is much faster (Less than 5 Seconds, with El Capitan 10.11.1 it took more than 30 Seconds), compatible programs, Mail works without any problem, the only detail it's when I use Firefox it goes crazy, it freezes, it seems to cause errors in the video card, but when I perform other functions. No problem. With Yosemite of first the same some problems, but with Maverick the Mac flies. Comparing after many updates (Maverick to El Capitan, Yosemite to El Capitan, Maverick to Yosemite and El Capitan) but what results well is clean installation from USB or DVD Dual Layer.

I have a MacBook Pro Mid 2012, 8 Gb Ram, 512 Gb SSD HD, OSX El Capitan.

For me it has been a real failure. My computer worked fine, fast, correct, I updated the first time and it started to go slow, and this week's update has already been deadly, it already takes 20 minutes to start ... if I know, I'll keep the yosemite that I was pearls, the captain has been a disaster .... on both the old and new mac, it has been a big increase in slowness. I do not recommend it under any circumstances

Hello, Robert. I was reading your comment on the subject of updating to El Capitan and you detailed the machine you have, I have the same one but without changes (mechanical hard disk and 4 ram) and I wanted to ask you a question: For some time my Mac has been putting slow and I wanted to know if you can recommend some improvements to make it fast ... I had thought about changing the hard drive for an SSD, which model do you recommend? Thank you very much for the help.

The same thing happens to me, it constantly crashes, with FIREFOX it asks me for the password, which it does not have, the mouse disconnects every two by three, another mouse works better with a cable, but suddenly the mouse and keyboard stop working .
        I can't find a solution

For all those who had had problems updating El Capitan. Restart the computer and when you hear the boot sound, press Apple (Command) + R key, until the boot screen similar to the usual appears; right after, the Select a language window appears (in our case obviously Spanish). It will go to a window with several options: Disk Utility, Reinstall, ... etc. At first, ignore any of that. Go to the Utilities menu and select Terminal. A window will appear with bash at the beginning.
The Disk Utility of the main window told me that everything was fine and yet with the commands that I put below it fixed things for me, and solved slowness problems.
Write the command diskutil list. Information about the identifiers of our discs will appear. Write fsck_hfs -frl / rdiskNsM where N and M are the numbers of the identifiers of your disk that appeared in the previous command (if -frl does not go then you change to -fl). In some it will tell you that it cannot be done and in others it will. Type ls -l / dev / disk * (It will list the files that start with disk). One should appear which is disk10. Write fsck_hfs -fr / dev / disk10 (If -fr doesn't work then you put -f). For those who want to try the other disks, they will tell you that it cannot.
If after all you detected a problem and solved it ... it will be time to restart normal, by apple menu. In my case the startup is somewhat more agile and opens everything faster.
Greetings and may the captain accompany you.

I currently use a bookpro from 2013 and I have software like VLC, uTorrent
and fire fox (because the Safari drove me crazy). They already told me that I have to migrate in the end
cut pro X del 7. What I want to know is if the captain will let me install VLC and uTorrent
to see my movies. I ask you the same question if I buy this year's bookpro with the Sierra.

I did the update and it is very good, the only thing I notice is that in the trackpad gestures you cannot drag a folder or an icon to another place I do not know what happens because with the yosemite it worked perfectly.

  6.   Tony said

    Hi Rafa!
I think you mean the '3 finger drag' option. Now you have to activate it in the 'accessibility' control panel, in the 'trackpad and mouse' section. If you click on a button that says 'trackpad options' (or something similar, since I'm not in front of my Mac now), you will see the possibility of activating it.

If there is, since the system does not allow you to downgrade, what you can do is restart the machine and enter web recovery (cmd + alt + r) I think. At that moment you erase all your hard drive and download the operating system with which you purchased the machine; You find several tutorials on the internet, I had to do it like this, downloading from yosemite to mavericks through MATLAB, for the beta case I do not know, but the official at least that happened to me. Hello Jordi:
I have the same question as Gambu, I currently have 10.8.5 on my iMac and I am hesitant to update the OS to El Capitan. I find many more complaints and criticisms than benefits from the aesthetic and a supposed fluidity. It worries me above all to lose some old applications that I use, such as Burn, ArtFiles, the scanning one and the Adobe CS5 suite, which I use because they are faster than the others. Is it really justified to make the change? For now, the only thing that is asking me to update is to see the Twitter page in Safari and the Apple Store

Have any of you had a problem with battery life? I have a 13 ″ macbook pro and the battery does not exceed 4 hours when it was 7 hours before. I also have problems accessing the app store and updating, because it asks me for username and password and the wheel stays there spinning and it cannot be recognized.

I still had problems with the battery before, it lasted 7 hours and now it lasts 4 but I kept checking the battery and then after 2 months I got that my battery could no longer work well and I bought another, at the same time no computer could no longer disconnect it from the light connector because if I disconnected it, the mac would turn off, so I bought another battery and when the meat disconnected them and I pulled them very well but it is no longer 7 hours, it is still the same 4 hours and I got the message to repair battery. And in the asp store I don't know what happens that when I open it because I get the number of 2 updates that I have to do then I go to the app store but nothing appears, click the window and in the background you see the icon of the pencil the brush And if you see the number but I ask you then the sides to update, bought and the others and nothing appears, I have hurt update the captain but I cannot because nothing appears.

Install El Capitan from scratch and I run into the following problems:
    1. It does not recognize the apple tv (2nd generation) and it does not allow me to mirror the screen as in Yosemite.
    2. In mail, when deleting the emails puts them back in the inbox, impossible to delete them.
    3. The wireless keyboard goes crazy at times, starts to write by itself and I can neither pay it nor disconnect it, the only solution is to remove the batteries and put them back.
Regarding the speed, I do not notice the difference although I observe that it works at higher temperatures (60 degrees) without doing anything, just turning it on.
I think Apple has lost its way a little bit or the success has gone to their heads; Before when they released a new operating system it worked perfectly, now they seem to be betas to which updates must be added weekly. I don't know whether to go back to Yosemite or wait.

      Good morning Sherlock,

1- that Apple TV has JB? I have the Apple TV 3 and the AirPlay works perfectly and so on ...

2 - What of Mail could be with those of hotmail? We have not read anything about this error, if you solve it tell us!

3 - I don't think this is a software problem, as compared to Miguel, it seems more like a problem with the Hardware itself ...

In general, most users seem to have fared better, more fluid and so on.

      Regards!

      1.    Sherlock said

Hello Jordi, indeed the apple tv has the JB; In the mail there is, in addition to the iCloud account, a Hotmail account (outlook.es), regarding the keyboard problem (which is new, bought a week ago) I have detected that the problem occurs when returning from the suspension, I don't think it is due to the hardware.
        All the best

Hi Sherlock, except for the apple TV is exactly the same thing that happens to me. I have tried to update, to install from scratch recovering a copy with the data, to install from scratch and install everything by hand, in the end I have returned to Yosemite and everything goes smoothly. The funny thing is that it is a MacMini i7 where it fails, in the 2009 White Macbook it goes like silk, the difference is that in the latter there is only the operating system and little else, there is no application outside the OS.
My impression is that as long as you have a couple of programs outside of Apple, the thing breaks.

Hi Jordi I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014) that came from the factory with YOSIMITE, but when I upgrade to EL CAPITAN I see that the battery lasts less, what can I do?

        1.    Jordi Giménez said

The issue of the battery is delicate since in principle it should not consume much more power. If it is little I imagine that it will be normal, if it is exaggerated you can use the guarantee since you have 2 years in the case of Spain and that they look at it in Apple.

          regards

          1.    Pedro said

Well, I think it is not a hardware problem. If the battery is very good with a software and you barely change it and it lasts only 30% than the previous one, then there must be something very wrong, a bug in the new software that is consuming all the energy. It is my experience with OS X Lion (7 hours of bat) and now The failed "El Capitan" (3 hours if anything).

The saddest thing about all this is that we will have to wait 1 or 2 months in case for the geniuses of Apple to release the respective corrections.

    2.    frameworks said

calm, it happened to me too, I suppose that this last system hangs because it already loses some compatibility with previous versions of applications or also because of junk files that accumulate due to the use of the previous software, besides that Apple usually makes it so that in a forced way we leave the old thing little by little, exactly the same happened to me, so I did a recovery format on my mac when turning on (after the sound) press command + R and in utilities format your mac and then return to the reinstall option and by default it will install from the network the last version you had before the previous software was damaged, if in this case it was the captain it will be reinstalled but this time clean from scratch, I will tell you that it will take a long time, my speed was not that good so it took me about 6 hours, anyway ... now my cute mac runs and I have no problem, it is more the captain seems very good to me.

Hello, It has totally failed me. I have installed my 24-year imac from scratch, I did a timemachine backup before (thank God) it makes everything correct and when I activate the migration assistant to recover my programs etc. and it restarts, the white screen of I start with the apple and it fills the entire screen like little spikes and there it gets stuck. I turn off the rear button and when starting it hangs. I get the copy of timemachine back with yosemite and everything is normal again. I have tried 5 times different ways of installation and nothing keeps getting the same problem. everything seems to work fine installation until I retrieve my information with the migration wizard. I have observed that when I do the installation from scratch I try to access the copies of timemachine and they have disappeared. It does not recognize old copies. My conclusion is that this operating system is very green and with many problems and I think I will continue with yosemite until this clears up and polishes the system and fixes the multiple bugs that I am reading and many colleagues are reporting.

    1.    Jordi Giménez said

      Hi Alfonso,

Did you try to install the apps without the wizard? I would try to install them one by one if you say that you tried all the installation ways and others maybe it is some tool that when you restart your iMac hangs.

      Regards!

      1.    Alfonso said

Hello Jordi, thanks for answering me, It is an imac from 24 of 2009 and I have tried everything, I have only tried to recover with the assistant only the information and documents without recovering applications and it keeps giving me the same error, it is as if it loaded something that when starting it blocks it. For now I'm going to give up updating.

    2.    frameworks said

Hi Alfonso humm, your comment confirms my suspicion, really if we want to migrate to an update we must forget about the old, since it will always come out, my recommendation is that you do not update the captain if you do not want to part with your programs since That the captain works well, you must install it from scratch and install your programs from there again, just save things like photos and videos on your external disk and save them again, since it would be useless to do a clean installation if you put the time machine with data from In previous software, try it to see how it goes and tell us

1.- It does not allow me to open AutoCAD and if it does, it closes it very quickly. The same thing happened to me with Yosmite and I had to go back to the Mavericks.

2.- I use the boot camp to work on Max but after updating the keyboard does not recognize me.

In fact a friend told me that her motherboard had been burned in the last update. I know that's impossible, but it made me wonder. I bought my Mac last year and did the update with the empty PC, so I ask you if I should do something before doing it.
    Thank you!

Hello, I recommend that you do not update the captain now, it is very good but for it to work without errors, an installation from scratch is necessary, not an update since the most likely thing is that your mac will freeze and it will be blank at the beginning and lose your data, so finish your work and then save your important files on an external drive, forget the programs the most recommended is that you also reinstall them from scratch in the captain ... then format your mac and do a clean installation from scratch with it Captain ... I say it from experience, I went through a lot of trouble until I learned more about the functioning of the mac ... and good being that way, believe me that the captain runs very well and is very good.

I am trying to update my Mac Book Air but to the Captain but after reading all the comments I am terrified .. It also hangs and they predict that it will take 3 days to load. That has not happened to me with the previous update. I stay with Yosemite until Apple makes the necessary adjustments and says that it is safe and fast to download the new El Capitan operating system, which seems to be that captain has nothing.

Don't even think about updating. I did it and it's an operating system disaster. The premise is: If it works well for you, leave it that way. It worked perfectly for me with Lion, until I had the misfortune to update El Capitan, a total disaster: It does not connect to the app store, it took light years to restart, the computer does not turn off, I have to turn it off manually, the battery is eats it in 2 hours, among other little problems.

Hi Max. I also had an OSX 10.6.8 until three days ago. I have an iMac 21.5 ″ from 2009 and I was able to download it, yes, not without having to include the info. from my Master Card, after which I could download it for free and at least for now El Capi works for me. However, I have to say that iPhoto is now called Photos and in that application I cannot customize the music differently for each album but always the same song comes out for all albums even if I take it from my iTunes library.
I must say that I have not tried all the applications but I have "brujulele" a little and it seems that the mail the DVD, USB, etc. works well.

I have updated to The Captain and I do not find great improvement in an iMac 21 ′ corei5 and with 8 in ram, neither in the startup time nor in the opening of apps, then I skip the problem of not recognizing printer and a seagate that although they took out updated drivers, it wouldn't let me eject the hdd. I have quickly returned to Yosemite where everything worked normal. Maybe the updates are not for everyone, at least for me.

I do not know how long you have been in the computer world, but I see that this OS is another of the great shits that Apple has committed throughout history. It is not normal that it allows you to install a new OS from the previous one, and after having everything ready, it leaves you without one or the other, a locked computer and without any functionality ... Can this be called an operating system?

I did not make a copy because all the information I care about is on an external disk, but NOW WHAT DO I DO? THERE IS SOME SOLUTION ... who would send me to update ... a little help out there. Thanks

    1.    Ivan said

Hello Sara! It happened to you exactly like me. I have an easy fix but I have my head too. Do this:
Turn it on and before the apple image arrives, press alt and hold it .. it will give you two options go into recovery (press the mouse on the flexita that comes out) get into the memory of the hard disk and erase all the data it carries. Once you have done reinstall osx twndra q download it again so it will take you about 2 hours between download and installation. Ami failed me exactly that because I know that the dosco was removed above and that is, in my case it seems to be that I did not accept the update well, so it tries and it should work for you. I fixed it today and I'm doing great now

  54.   Sara said

Thank you very much Ivan but I don't think that's my problem because I had 700G of free hard drive space before the update so I don't think it's a space problem. Look that I have been thinking about it, for today I stop trying, I hope to find another solution and if I do not find it, then I will have no choice but to approach the technical service. Anyway thanks.

    1.    frameworks said

Sara you are eating the same error that the others, what happens is that when you update the captain about what you have had (either yosemite or mavericks or nose) it is like wearing a lack under some jeans .. I mean it will not .. they will get errors out of some program either after installing or when putting your time machine ... then what should you do ?? ... then take off your pants to use the skirt of course! ... do a recovery format your mac, yourself is easy from command + R and then go to the reinstall option .. by default the last version you had before it crashes will be installed and then it starts from scratch, it will work believe me! That is, if you forget about the time machine at least in your programs because it is configured to recover in the previous software not for captain ... then install your applications from scratch tb so that you feel the true power of the captain ... it's good. greetings.

  55.   Ivan said

I also had more than 200gb, the problem is not the memory itself, I think it is more a matter of overwriting existing files because the update has changes and perhaps it does not adapt well, it is not proven, you can not lose anything. You could only do better

  56.   Sara said

Thanks Ivan, I'll try tomorrow. I don't waste anything (just time) so let's see if there's any luck

I would like to know what Jordi Giménez thinks after reading all the disasters that occur when you update, and even when you do a clean installation. It must be that Apple pays you to write that the OS X El Capitan is a marvel, that you are going to do the "best" updating.

I'd like to hear about your experience upgrading your equipment and even a clean install. What does man think of all the flaws that is giving us headaches.

I'm still waiting for Apple to fix the bugs that my particular Macbook Pro has:

1- Initial startup of almost 3 minutes
2- It does not enter the app store so forget about the updates
3- The Adobe suite apps do not work
4- Most of the time it does not turn off
5- At rest, sometimes it does not start
6- The battery went from 6:30 hours to 2:40 hours, only sailing on safari

So every day I follow this forum, and the Apple USA forums to see who comes up with the solution, and so far nothing.

  58.   Jordi Giménez said

    Good Pedro,

When someone has problems with the update, whatever the reason, we try to help them from our own community of users and the editors of Soy de Mac.

    No, Apple pays us.

Usually the articles we write are based on our personal experience and I can tell you that OS X El Capitan works very well for me after doing a clean installation. Obviously not everyone can be happy or function well but for that we are here to help us in these cases where something fails.

The points that you make are very personal except for Adobe, since these are the ones that have to be updated to El Capitan and some of their tools may still fail, Apple can do little about that.

I hope that with the new version 10.11.1 they solve some problems of this version and solve those bugs of your MacBook.

Greetings and thanks for reading us daily Pedro

I ended up calling technical support and they told me that their servers were down, that this is the problem and that the solution you gave me is the correct one. What I don't quite understand is because they tell you that you can update it from anyone if later it will give us these troubles, with q. They would recommend formatting beforehand and we saved ourselves so much trouble.

Thank you very much to Ivan and Marcos for lending me the help. I hope that tonight I can finally have my imac again.

I was very disappointed when I switched from Mavericks to Yosemite, because everything slowed down, but with the Captain I have returned to a reasonable speed. It does present problems with Mail, which has to be configured again, paying special attention to the port number in the case of pop and smtp. It is important to update Java to 8, it has not been done automatically for me, I had to go to the System Preferences panel. Otherwise, the programs have continued to function without incompatibilities.

It worked well, the speed was acceptable (it never flew) and very stable. I updated to El Capitan and everything has gone wrong in but, although it is true, it recognizes USB, keyboard and all the hardware, I must say that the speed is terrible, everything is very slow, from on to off, everything works very slow, to the point that Windows 7 is faster than this mac, not to mention opening applications, it takes forever and the worst thing is that the colored ball is a constant visit on the screen, even more, the applications are "stuck" having to force the closure. For me, it has been a terrible experience. Will I be the only one?

Dear, I tried twice to install El Capitan (not from scratch) on a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008), Memory 8 GB. Both times it was updated correctly, restarted and started working, Total Finder did not work (but I already knew this) and it does not let me navigate through some sites because it does not recognize the certificate (Google Drive among them).
The next day when trying to turn on the computer it is "checked" with Apple's apple and the system load progress bar completely blank, I waited a long time and it did not advance at all. Luckily I had Back Up and with the Time Machine I went back to Yosemite and the equipment works fine.
Will I have to do a clean installation?

Oysters is the same iMac as mine but I have more RAM. The problem is that I can't test that adapter because I don't have it worse, I can tell you that USB works well in my case for both mice, spikes and other accessories ...

In this case, if they mention it on the web, I imagine that they will already be in contact with Apple since this adapter was sold even in the Apple Store I think I remember. Hopefully your problem will be solved soon.

I upgraded to El Capitan on a Mac Retina and it runs very fast, while running Parallel Desktop smoothly.
I have the problem with the Office Outlook, since every time I turn on it starts to synchronize again and it takes forever or it shows an error. Outlook is no longer reliable and having multiple accounts on it is really a major problem that requires urgent fix.

To anyone who has not installed El Capitan, DO NOT DO IT, especially the 10.11.1 update, since it is most likely that you will have many problems, lose functionality, go slow or worse, it will get stuck at startup as I do It happens to me and I haven't had a computer for more than a week. Congratulations to those who are doing El Capitan, but from what I read here and in other forums, many of us have big problems when we didn't have them before. This happened in windows years ago. Apple should not launch a system with so many problems ...

Very interesting this report and your comments. It is in Portuguese but it is understood very well. Let's see if Apple puts a solution and fast, there are many users who pay high prices and we are disappointed with the new OSX.

Since Jobs is gone, mac removes systems all the time and they do not take the time to improve the system that they remove, they do not finish improving one and they already release another, perhaps even though the previous one is in beta .... that is a very attitude unprofessional, the improvements are usually in performance linked to the internet, they forget about the professionals who use the mac to work. Upgrading to a system that is in beta ... is a risk of wasting time. Why doesn't Apple focus on getting it right ??! improve the system they take out !! and don't change it until they get to a very good version of it !! (?!).

The same thing happened to me at 90% of the installation. In my case, the solution and after many attempts with restart and recovery was to format the hard drive of the mac, since it did not allow me to reinstall Yosemite again neither from the backup copy nor from the Internet, due to «having a later version loaded ». Once the drive was formatted, I was able to install Yosemite. Many hours lost because of El Capitan.

Let's see Jordi, 4 years ago I bought an iPhone 5 because the 3G with its last update no longer moves when it was a shot (they no longer sold the 4 of course), when connecting it to my macbook pro 15 from the end of 2008 it asks me for iTunes 11, I try to update Itunes and it asks me for Snow Leopard to manage it (in w xp if I could have itunes 11 curious), I buy Snow Leopard and for now the problem is fixed.
Yesterday I updated to 9.1 because it asks me so much that it already expires. Of course it does not warn me that with Itunes 11 it is over to manage my iPhone (and turn back nanai). Now Itunes 12 asks me which of course is only compatible with Lion and higher.
If I install Lion or higher, my macbook pro will surely slow down and find various incompatibilities.
Summary: to run an iPhone with IOS 9 I must change the laptop or manage it from a computer with XP that I have around 10 years ago. I can also expand the RAM and mount a clear solid hard drive since my Macbook Pro is obsolete for Apple to handle an Iphone 5.
I accept octopus but at least he warns me in what situation I am.
Pelín fed up with going to the Cupertino's tow.
    Best regards

    1.    Jordi Giménez said

      Greetings to you too Carlos.

One thing that surprises me is managing the iPhone since since I used them back in 2009 I have always been able to perform the same tasks from iTunes. What do you mean by this?

Another detail is that the MacBook Por from late 2008 are compatible with OS X El Capitan https://www.soydemac.com/estos-son-los-mac-compatibles-con-os-x-el-capitan/ Why don't you update? Go back you can always as long as you have a backup in Time Machine or the OS X software itself On a USB-Sd-CD.

In my case, until the release of the iPhone 6S I was with an iPhone 5 and zero management problems or iTunes, or anything ...

      1.    Carlos Lorenzo said

How about Jordi, thanks for your answer. I have not had to explain myself well, I meant that when I bought the Iphone 5 I needed iTunes 11 and since my OSX was Leopard because it was impossible to have iTunes 11. I updated to Snow Leopard and the matter was finished. Now when doing the 9.0 on the iPhone it asks me for iTunes 12 which is not supported by Snow Leopard so I must go to Lion or higher.
Probably if I do not increase RAM, my macbook pro will slow down with Lion or higher apart from the possible incompatibilities that will surely appear. What I don't understand is why Apple won't let me use iTunes 12 on my Snow Leopard, which is going so well for me and forces me to update OSX if I want to have iTunes 12 (necessary to manage iPhone with IOS9)
        thanks my friend

      2.    Carlos Lorenzo said

In summary, according to my modest opinion, Apple's policy is: I force you to update the OSX (or you run out of iTunes 12 for your iPhone with IOS 9), your macbook will slow down as it does not have the appropriate hardware to move the device smoothly. new OSX and in the medium term you will have to buy another new macbook.
Example: Refurbished iPhone 3G, without any non-original app, but with the latest firmware that came out for it, it is hardly worth making calls. Just in case Apple does not allow you to downgrade lest it still works for you.
        It is my opinion.
        Best regards

The update for El Capitan reduces processing consumption very little. It's good until trouble starts. My Mac Mini worked very slow with Yosemite, for this reason I had to download it again to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 (but the problem that it does not bring compatibility with iCloud), I read about the performance in El Capitan and I started to test it, everything worked pearls, but when the 10.11.1 update arrived goodbye to performance and support for NTFS drives. Now I have reinstalled but Mountain Lion that already has compatibility for iCloud and it seems that I have performance again. In summary, the Operating Systems forced to install and to some extent immature cause problems when there is not so much hardware that is supported; El Capitan is a good OS, but it is limited to Hardware, it is far from being an excellent final OS. As a recommendation, install El Capitan when your hardware is a Core i3 with at least 4Gb in RAM, if your hardware is lower, keep your Operating System.

Hello, I have installed the snow leopard since I bought my iMac in 2009. I am forced to update since when I update iPad and iPhone to iOs 9, itunes now tells me that it can not synchronize me if I do not update to an itunes higher than 11.4 with the snow leopard. And for that, it seems that I have to buy a more current iOs X. In apple they tell me to update to El Capitan, but I have read all negative about it and I am afraid that everything will not work as it should. It is a pity that only for the iTunes I have to change the iOs since all the rest works OK: So, I have been looking that the Yosemite and the Mavericks also exist, but these no longer appear in the Apple store. Can't upgrade to these anymore?
With what system do you move and which one do you recommend updating me?

I've been updating my Mac since early 2009 and El Capitan has been the worst update Apple has ever released. I have returned to recover the copy of yosemite and I have restored everything, I have tried to update more than 5 times in all possible ways and in the end I gave up, the Mac remains stuck when starting up, the screen is frozen and does not react to anything .
Apple will have to polish the captain update a lot to get it to update again and I will have to be very sure that future updates work correctly.
    A suspense for Apple.

Hlola JM, I was in exactly the same case as you. In the end, after having backed up Time Machine, I have decided to do the free update to El Capitan (with great fear that if). What I have done is buy another 4Gb of RAM and install it (it is very simple). With the 8Gb of RAM installed I did the update on my Snow Leopard and apparently everything seems to work fine. I had to update the VWMfussion to version 8 yes. You may like the rest more or less (I don't like iTunes 12 for now) but it seems to work in a very Ipad style (Icons, etc ,,)
My 2008 macbook pro with 8Gb seems to go smoothly with the Captain this.
    All the best
    Carlos
PS: Apple's are suckers because iTunes 12 can be installed even on Windows XP but not on Snow Leopard, which is barely five years old.
Always in tow behind them JM

El Capitan, must be lame, because fast, it is very little. A pilonga chestnut. I have had an imac for just a year, and Before updating my imac it was flying, everything smooth (an i5, at 3,4gh and 8gb). Programs opened with astonishing speed, the spotlight displayed information instantly; the computer opened to me in the blink of an eye, any option that I pressed in any program was applied to the document without knowing it. Now …… .with this chestnut from Grumete (neither Capitan nor na de na), starting the computer takes me 45 seconds of clock, and everything has slowed down to the levels of my old PCs. Sincere and disinterested advice: DO NOT UPDATE (as I miss my Mavericks) I repeat CAPITAN = SLOW (It has only served me to link with the iphone,)

After this text loaded with irony and sarcasm, and already from a serious point of view; CAPITAN has disappointed me, it has been a huge delay compared to the workflow that Mavericks had used to me. The Windows Vista of the Mac has arrived, I hope it is not to stay.

A real disappointment. DO NOT UPDATE. IT IS A "TRILERO" OPERATING SYSTEM

Fully recommended for those who have Yosemite and for those who want to install new applications, and update their old Mac with a more modern OS, as well as update browsers and other apps.

The only option is to force a shutdown. I'll try to see if it can be solved with a clean install. My mac is a macbook pro middle 2012

Hello; In general, El Capitan works well for me but I have a problem that seems serious to me. I write short stories and novels, and I use the text substitution tool a lot to abbreviate names, for example, if I write ss I am automatically replaced by Mr. Chiva, for example.
Now I have changed the novel and I have changed all the substitutions for the new characters, theoretically they appear well in the text substitution box, whether I access it from preferences or from Pages; but the old substitutions keep appearing. I have arranged for Sandra to appear by writing ss, but Mr. Chiva continues to appear, and so on with everyone.
Is there a way to reset that? The substitutions that appear are the ones I put with the Yosemite, and El Capitan does not know how to change them.

It seems that each software update "accidentally hits" the previous hardware "inviting" the consumer to update their equipment ... This will continue to happen until a couple of a good engineer and a good lawyer decide to sue the company ... Not yet They are born but they will take many millions and in the process they will fix these problems so that companies do not continue to see our faces

If it is worth updating, it seems to me OS X El Capitan works better than OS X Yosemite and even OS X Mavericks, which at the time got to improve performance, although that if, the best of all time was OS X Snow Leopard!

It's crap since it generates many errors with the design programs when saving them when rewriting them, I do not recommend anything if they are designers who update it. Better wait a bit for an improvement.

I upgraded my Mac and I hate the brand more and more. Now it turns out that the keyboard does not work, that is, I can not turn up the volume, brightness and the launcher does not work since the update, and the mouse does not turn up / down, right / left with my finger. I go to mouse settings and it only marks the option of whether I want the main button to be the left or the right and the speed of the same. A trash.

Hello! I have updated my MacBook Pro from 2009 and when I did the installation it got stuck on the home screen. It won't let me shut it down or reboot or anything. I move the cursor and when I click, it ignores me. If anyone knows how I can solve it, I would appreciate your answer!

      Good Horus,

turn it off from the button directly and try to boot into safe mode_ https://www.soydemac.com/como-arrancar-el-mac-en-modo-seguro-para-solucionar-problemas/

    Hey.
I cannot access the appstore, therefore I cannot get Yosemite.
    The story is the following:
In a late 2009 macbookpro unibody I replaced the hard drive with a ssd and the disk drive with a higher capacity ssd.
I did the installation by usb and everything is fine.
I updated the entire El Capitan operating system and then started researching the software I use and its compatibility with the new system. It turns out that for now they do not usually work very well, you have to wait for adobe to fix some little things.

Looking for how to return to yosemite, I find this article and discover that I cannot access my account in the appstore.

Is there a way to download the installer without going through the appstore? This happens to me for not being cautious.

    Greetings.

my problem is fat. From what I see I hope you answered me on this page and what do I do with a white mabook at the end of 2009 with 2 Gb of ram version os x 10.8.5? I have been reading problems since Yosemite that I can do and I think I have read here that the macbook white and black leave them to us, Jordi, please give me even an opinion if I throw it in the trash or keep it because of the collectors of mac el Anyway, after all, I will go but surely to windows because even a mac charger costs 80 euros and above all they manufacture it so that you can not fix them if it really were as it was in its principles mac with steven jobs this is not the same for anything And that I am a beginner in this system or brand and unfortunately I arrived late because I have this mac for a year it is clear that the person who sold it to me made a lot better out of it than I did. not so much if I must say that when I bought it it was a shot with all the years that I already had my mac at that time but I never passed the version os x10.8.5 nor did I ever dare to advance through the comments and sites where I looked but never e I've read about my mac or version, I don't think I'll keep it for collectors, I'll wait for about 15 years to pass if I'm still alive, of course, and I'll put it up for sale or auction to see if I tripled what I gave for antiquity. system to that google chrome does not open updates for the version of the system that I use nise if even safari will work for me hahaha nothing encourages me to go to windows at least or I will have to save

      Good rixar,

The first thing to say is that that white MacBook from 2009 with a new SSD disk and a little more RAM that you can find in any store, would give you excellent performance. In fact, the 2009 MacBooks are good machines and with these two changes you will surely have a Mac for a few more years. Once you have more RAM and the disk is just enjoy.

      Regards!

I have a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.9.5 Operating System, year 2012 with 4 GB of memory. They gave me a fairly expensive Magic Mouse 2, in the ai shop the technicians recommended me to install the El Capitan Operating System, the latest version. After reading all the macbook users, where they reveal the innumerable difficulties and problems caused by having installed the blessed "Captain", what type of wireless mouse would you recommend for my computer without changing the operating system?
Thank you very much for the reply.

Jordi. First of all greet you. I have the typical problem that is left with the white screen with the apple and the complete status bar and doing nothing. I did not save a backup, I restart the Mac and it remains stuck where it is ... what do you advise me to be able to recover my information (docs, photos, etc)? I've been with the Mac like this for about 6 days.

    1.    Jordi Giménez said

      Hi Cesar,

The first thing I would try is to start the Mac by pressing ALT (option) right after hearing the boot sound and wait for a small menu to appear showing you with which partition or boot disk

If this doesn't work try in safe mode: https://www.soydemac.com/como-arrancar-el-mac-en-modo-seguro-para-solucionar-problemas/

If with this there is no luck you tell me and see what we can do,

Hello Jordi, I want to change from the operating system Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63b), to the captain. I have a 27 Imac, from mid 2011 with 3,4 GHz Intel Core i7 processor, 16 ram, AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2048 MB graphics. I want to make a backup copy and update it to the aforementioned Captain, but I am scared by everything I read about the problems that it gives, mostly because I have the Adobe 5.5 suite and I would like to update it to CC 2015, but for that I have to change the operating system I think, you will not know if with the adobe suite of CC 2015 of problems the Captain or it is better to install Mavericks and wait for the captain. All the best

  155.   gegeeme said

I think this article is a bit irresponsible, Jordi, seeing the serious hardware problems that Captain is causing in so many Macs (no longer simple little app problems). At the very least you should mention these, or suggest that a copy should be made in time machine before proceeding.
Haven't started my Macbook in a week, pale green light on charger. I do not know what has changed so that it starts now, although the battery does not charge, and I do not know whether to try restarting to format, because maybe it does not restart (as happened the last time I wanted to restart), so even if I had one copy in time machine, I don't know if I could restore, why if I turn off, maybe I won't turn on anymore, super, and unjustifiable.

Hi, I have installed OS Capitan on the MACBook PRO. It came from the Leopard. I have not done it from scratch but it works even though I have lost in Office Word and Excel. Now I am trying to load the Office 2011 into an .ISO file and I have no way to open the file for me. Neither from disk utilities. Does anyone know what can I do?

    Hello everybody.

I have been working exclusively on Macintosh computers and unix workstations for about 30 years. At home and at work. I celebrated step 9 to OSX (linux-based). It was a bit clairvoyant ... Afterwards, each update brought new advantages.

    Always??? DO NOT!!

From Lion to El Capitan, I haven't seen REALLY significant improvements. Just little bullshit that doesn't add anything from a practical point of view and that even causes problems where there were none before. So now I see complications and functional losses: there is no way to duplicate screens, watch your computer on TV (unless they meet some rules, iTV ...), the management of "Spaces" is calamitous, uncomfortable and not very intuitive. Especially in relation to the magnificent version of "Snow Leopard." In Yosemite I managed to solve it by buying a little program called "Total Spaces" that provides a management of the Spaces quite similar to that of "Snow Leopard" ... but this program no longer works in El Capitan.

I am not at all satisfied, not to say frustrated, with the evolution of Mac operating systems since "Snow Leopard." And that I have been a great defender for many years! I get the impression that this is simply a commercial policy of programmed obsolescence, but instead of being applied to "hardware", it is done through software. Thus, there comes a time when a computer in perfect condition becomes a totally useless object unable to function ... Then ... To buy another! Commercials and sellers, obviously, will not agree at all ...

I have decided to go to "Ubuntu" and at work I stay until "Snow Leopard". I believe that users should have the option of staying in the work environment that most satisfies us. The new bullshit, called "news" that includes things of doubtful need for someone else, not for me. Especially if they are to the detriment of loss of small functions

Thank you for having the patience to read me this tantrum,

    Hans

      I agree with Hans.
Certain programs such as browsers no longer support Snow Leopard. The most stable and compatible system
Apple, that is why it is used by all professional users (designers, architects, etc.)
The new versions fix visual blunders and security issues.
They give you the Captain's installation for free, but does someone tell you what programs it is compatible with?
If I did an update from Snow Leopard to Captain at this time, nothing would work.
Neither the Suitcase 3 nor the Adobe Suite CS5, the base of my workstation.
Maybe the browser works well and the nonsense of casual users or kid gamers or youTubers, tweeters or faceboqueros.

They do not support forcing us to make software UpDate of all our programs and hardware.
That is what they live on, and they hold us hostage.

Guys I found a MacBook Pro 3 years ago without the charger and it turns out that now I would like to lend the charger charge and when I wanted to enter I actually had an administrator password so I thought that once the disk was formed I would restore the factory but I forgot that I need the installation CD, I left it like a pretty paperweight? Or what alternative is there to be able to use it at least since the owner never contacted me why I had Wi-Fi activated and I did not have it with iCloud either since Lion did not yet have that service and I do not know why I decided to format it this year and ruin it ?

Hello Jordi, three days ago I accepted an update on El Capitan (I already had it installed) and from that moment, my macbook, despite working correctly, does not allow me to shut it down or restart it normally, in the support service the solution that They gave was to enter safe mode, reboot and wait for the problem to be fixed. I have started to investigate the subject and I have found many comments and supposed solutions on this problem, but they are so diverse and distanced from each other that I don't really think they are the option to be fingering the machine everywhere and crossing your fingers to that some work. Do you have information about it or a much more tangible solution in this regard?
    Thank you

Jordi Giménez, no one doubts your good faith and you are great giving solutions to cover waterways. I am an older person, 74 years old and eight as a maquero, but the feeling that reading the exhibition gives me is of a regression, I seem to be speaking most of Windows, when we are doing it of Mac. What is happening to us? This conformism in the face of such great failures. Can we imagine what an Appel engineer earns? We are doing their job on paying. To have problems and to be looking for solutions on the Internet, we were already fine without spending so much. You say it always has to be updated. Not if we find what we find. I have already said my age, I use the computer to write, get on the Internet, see family photos, a movie, enjoy music, download things, send mail and my library. With Snow Leopard I am super delighted, I understand the concerns of others with programs and more complicated things, but that's how it goes, I go where I go to find out about the subject I only read complaints, from time to time someone is doing well. That, forgive me was not the Mac philosophy. I updated my iPad mini inadvertently, it is not recognized by my iTunes since the update. If I download El Capitan with a more modern iTunes it will recognize it but it will stop recognizing my ipod clasicc and my ipod touch. Tucked into the App Store, what consumers talk about the program is to burst into tears. Is Appel asking me to stop enjoying something they did very well? My age and my financial disposition agree. I will update, I do not say no, but I will do it when I have with what I have the amount of problems that those who are updating now have.
