How to keep folders on top in macOS Finder when sorting by name

The Finder is our file manager. It is always running and we use it more than once throughout the day. However, it is best to always have a good order in it to find everything we want. And the folders in between the files is not a good idea. Let's learn to always have them at the top when we order by name.

El Mac Finder is an old friend from all of us. It has been in the operating system for years and is the first to welcome you when you start your Mac for the first time. There you will find a file manager, not only of your Mac's hard drive, but of any external elements that you connect to the computer. There you will see documents, images, videos, folders, etc. And it is the latter that we want to always have it at the top of everything so we can access them as soon as possible. We explain how to do it.

The first thing we want to tell you with this that we are going to explain to you is that the folders of your different locations will be ordered and will be visible at the top of the Finder whenever you order by names; if you do it by date, size, etc. it will not work. That said, the steps are very simple. On many occasions we need to investigate something more among the options that macOS offers us. And one of them is this: keep the folders on top when we order by name.

Sort folders in macOS Finder

Where do I find this option? Easy: click on "Finder" in the macOS Dock and in the menu bar, click on "Finder" again. Among the options that appear, give a mouse click on «Preferences». And in the last tab, the one that calls itself «Advanced» you will see that the last option that you can mark is "Keep folders up to computer by name". Ready, once marked, you can already try it in the folders you want. From now on these will appear as soon as you open a section of your Finder.
