Know the speed of your network connection on Mac

If you need to find out how fast your link speed is in relation to to Wi-Fi connection or wired, or rather, the speed of the computers that are connected to a particular wireless router, you can find this information and other information of interest through the web utility application that is included in all versions of OS X.

Perhaps this is the fastest way to determine the link speed of any interface, be it Wi-Fi or ethernet, however it seems that this much needed utility for some users it has been moved from Utilities to another "hidden" folder within the system. If you have in mind to use it very often, it is best to move it to Applications or Utilities or directly use Spotlight to find it, although I would recommend the first option.

This information will actually be very useful if our Wi-Fi network or more specifically the equipment connected to it they are slow in relation to the network and thus be able to carry out an optimization or test if one channel is better than another to use within your network. As I have already mentioned, this utility will show the connection speed for any network interface on the Mac, including Wi-Fi which is what we will focus on here for this example.

Once we have clicked on Network utility when searching for it with Spotlight, we will see the «Info» tab with two fields that are the ones that matter to us, one is the appropriate network interface that appears above in the drop-down menu, in this case we will search for »Wi-Fi» (it can be en0 or en1) and thus find the connection speed active wi-fi, «link speed», which should be measured in megabits per second, for example, as you can see my connection is 450 Mbit / s. In the other information fields we will find details of the vendor, the interfaces and the model.

Keep in mind that this only measures the theoretical maximum connection of our network, that is, the speed to which we are connected in LAN so if we want to know the real internet speed we must use other programs or online tools such as SpeedTest.net for example.

It is much faster to obtain this information by clicking on the network icon on the top bar while holding down the Alt key.

Thanks for your comment. Indeed, with the ALT key pressed on the wifi icon in the menu bar we can do the same. However, for other types of connections, no, since the option is not given, in addition, the network utility is more complete. Still for a quick look it is better.

Good evening Miguel Angel; I just bought an Imac 27 5k, model mf886ya because it was on show and the price was very sweet. The mouse appears with the name of a person and the name of the shopping center where I bought it also appears. My question is if they can be removed in a simple way because I just updated him to El Capitan.
The updates seem to me that they take forever even though I have him connected to ethernet.
My email in case you want to help me is apdiazg@hotmail.com
Thank you very much in advance.
I come from PC's and I have no idea about Mac's. It is the first and I see it very complicated.

I have a 27 ″ imac from the end of 2009, and I have just put fiber optics at home, I have hired 30 megabytes, the cable reaches me, but only 6 megabytes arrive through the wifi. Is the problem with my card network? or what could be the problem?

Good afternoon, today I was given to corroborate the internet megabytes that I have with the operator and it gave me the following result:

I currently have 6 megabytes of navigation, when making the measurement on a windows computer, the download of the 6 megabytes is actually displayed by a certain program to measure this data, but when performing them on my macBook Pro it is observed that there is a decrease in the megabytes of navigation. Is this normal? there would be a problem in the reception of the navigation megabytes. Thanks for your help.
