A Big Sur macOS he has little left to be dethroned. Technology advances at a frenetic pace. What is new today will be obsolete in four days. And the same goes for macOS versions. His reign lasts exactly one year.
Next week begins the WWDC of 2021, where Apple will present the new version macOS 12. And there is already some clue about the name that will be given to the creature. could be "Mammoth»Or«Monterrey«. Let's see the reason for these two nicknames.
Every year Apple launches its new macOS update, and apart from identifying itself with the version number (the next will be 12), the company also "baptizes" it with a code name. Curiously, this only happens with the software of the Macs.
From 2013, macOS versions are named after well-known places in California. So far, we've had: Mavericks, Yosemite, El Capitan, Sierra, High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina, and Big Sur. And we have hints as to what the next one might be called. During the last year, Apple has renewed and abandoned some commercial names that could point us to what macOS 12 will be called.
Apple registered several names around 2013 and 2014 through “front” companies when it began using California locations to MacOS. Yosemite, Sierra, El Capitan, and Big Sur were included in that same batch of trademarks. Names like "Diablo", "Condor", "Tiburon", "Farallon", "Miramar", "Rincón", "Pacific", "Secuoya", "Shasta", "Grizzly", "Skyline" and "Redtail" also were included, but their business registration has apparently not been renewed by Apple.
"Mammoth" and "Monterey" have been commercially registered by Apple
But curiously, Apple has renewed two of those commercial names to use them as the name of a computer system. These two names are "Mamut" and "Monterrey" (originally, "Mammoth" Y "Monterey").
"Mammoth" has just been renewed by Apple on April 29 of this year. It is the most up-to-date name in Apple's portfolio. Presumably the Cupertinos have chosen him for representing Mammoth Lakes, California. Mammoth Lakes is a ski resort located near a beautiful lake in the Sierra Mountains, not far from Yosemite. Surely more than one company manager usually skis there.
The other possible name, "Monterey", was renewed on December 29, 2020. Apart from being the name of a city, it is also the name of the peninsula, where to the south of it, the "Big Sur" coast is located. . So it could look like that macOS Monterey would be an extension of Big Sur macOS. On Monday we will leave doubts.
