MacOS Mojave beta 5 enables per-app eGPU acceleration

The beta 5 of macOS Mojave brings some important news, if you are one of those who want to squeeze the graphics of your Mac. Now you can selectively enable eGPU acceleration per application. Until now it was only possible to accelerate the graphics that were transferred to the external screen connected to our Mac.

From the Mojave beta, users can assign the use of the external eGPU to one or more applications on our Mac, even when it is connected to an external display. Therefore, we can directly accelerate the application we are running.

This is a significant change when it comes to using eGPUs. Graphics-intensive applications such as Final Cut Pro X or any other video editing application can be accelerated directly on the screen of our iMac or MacBook Pro.

The function is disabled by default. To enable eGPU acceleration in macOS Mojave beta 5, you must:

  1. Connect the eGPU to the Mac. You need to have a Mac with Thunderbolt 3.
  2. Select application through the Finder.
  3. Go to applications folder, found in the path: Macintosh HD-Applications.
  4. Select the application and click on get information.
  5. Now look for the checkbox: Prefer external GPU.

Some users had tried this option and even showed benchmarks, but for this they had to use terminal commands, since macOS version 10.13.4. But now this function is much more intuitive.

Apple has been selling a BlackMagic eGPU for several weeks, 100% efficient with Macs. In fact, it looks like a product manufactured by Apple, or at least inspired by the products of the Apple brand. Its simplicity of use, the quietness of its product, as well as the great capacity to move graphics, make it a perfect product to give prolivalence to Apple's most powerful machines, but at the same time they need an extra graphic power if their user is dedicated to the world of video editing.
