On June 22, Apple will celebrate an atypical WWDC, a WWDC 2020 that will be completely online and whose presentation event will be held via streaming. The rest of the developer events will be available to this community through its website and the Apple Developer application.
macOS, It is the only Apple operating system that is accompanied by a name. As the release date of the new version of macOS approaches, speculation about the name that this new version will have begins to circulate. In recent years, Apple has used location names located in California.
The first version Apple released based on location names was Mavericks. During the early days of the OS X Mavericks launch, more than 20 California-themed trademark applications from various companies were discovered that were almost certainly shell companies created by Apple to conceal your identity.
Over time, some of those names have already been used such as Yosemite, Sierra and Mojave, but the rest of the brands that Apple had registered years ago have not yet been used. During the days prior to WWDC 2019, several media verified that of the total number of names that had been registered, only four were still active: Mamooth, Monterey, Rincon and Skyline. Rincon can be downloaded since it has expired this last year.
Companies that register names have a period of 36 months from the date of approval to be able to submit a Declaration of Use that shows that they are using the trademark commercially. Those initial 36 months can be extended for periods of 6 months, an extension that Apple has been making in recent years with these four names.
Possible macOS 10.16 names
macOS Catalina, the latest version of macOS that Apple introduced last year, was not one of the names that Apple had registered with the release of OS X Mavericks, so we do not know if Apple plans to follow a new name or will use any of the 3 names that it still has in its possession.
Mammoth
It is related to Mammoth Lakes and Mammoth Mountain, a hiking and ski area in the Nevada mountains.
Monterey
City located on the Pacific coast, and it has been a favorite choice for many of the macOS users in recent years.
skyline
This name is probably related to the name Skyline Boulevard, located on the crest of the Santa Cruz Mountains and extending south from San Francisco.
